Default Help me choose a guitar for Live use!!!

I'm looking for a new guitar for my solo gigs. I want something comfortable sitting or standing, with nice playability and live sound. I realize that the Martin, while very comforfotable may not sound the best of the 3 in a live situation.

Yamaha FSX5
Martin SC-13E
Taylor 314-CE

Please let me know of any experiences you may have had with these.

Best
Ron

Probably can't go wrong with any of them. I might pick thee one that you like plugged in the best... I'm not as sure about that new Martin model though...

When faced with the same situation 8 years ago I picked the 314ce. It's been a good guitar and I still play it, but my tastes have changes some. I just use what I want a put a sound hole pickup in it for live work now. Sound hole pickups have come a long way, and I like em better than the built in electronics in most guitars. I use the Fishman Rare Earth Blend, but there are other good ones as well.

Hi,

I have the 324CE which should be similar to your 314-CE. I like it. The fretboard is a bit flat for me (I am used to my Eastmans) but it is very playable. The ES2 is a bit on the quiet side, I have a Session DI that I run between it and my amp, works great and improves the sound a bit too.

The 324CE has a mahogany top, I think the 314 is spruce. I tried one of those 3-series (and 4-series) with spruce tops and for me they were too bright, but that's just taste. If you are plugging in, you can EQ it however you like, anyway.

Good luck.

I have been gigging with the SC13e for about 6 months now and it's by far the most comfortable guitar to play for long 3-4 hour gigs I've ever had. The playability and comfort are second to none. The amplified sound sound is certainly adequate for your listeners and with a little EQ and possibly a pedal or two, can be made to sound very good. Any of these enhancements will just be for you. I have played the SC13e straight into my PA and the general public thinks it sounds fine. Also, you can always have the pickup switched out if you ever feel like it.

The FSX5 would be my second choice due to it's fantastic pickup system and smaller concert body, but I would save some dough and get the FSX3 instead.

The Taylor 314ce is a nice guitar too but the body is equally as thick as a dread which get uncomfortable for long gigs. Having your right arm reaching out over a thicker guitar can add up over the hours and days.

Some great advice here. @jackb1, your take is that the pickup system is adequate for live use? I'm not a tone snob by any means. I have an IR loader/pre amp. I think that would work??

From this list, I‘d take the SC-13e but the pickup would be replaced with a LR Baggs Anthem.
There’s also Cole Clark with their wonderful pickup system.

I got Martin with Aura.

We all know the cons of playing an acoustic live.

We want the tone of the acoustic guitar, as being mic'ed with a good condenser.

For my money Aura does this best. Though I haven't gigged my OM yet.

My Gibson has the Aura pro. I have been complimented on it's tone on many occasions.

Only acoustic, amplified tone I ever been complimented on.

I'm sure the Martin W/Aura, will get the same attention.

I'm a huge fan of the 314ce. I owned one for a few years and always thought it checked all the boxes. If it's good enough for this guy, it's plenty good enough for me!

Hi Ron,

I think the answer depends on your style of play. If you're primarily a fingerpicker (or "fingerstylist" as some would say) then the clear answer would be to go with the Taylor. The Taylor GAs have great balance, sustain and clarity for finger work (I use an 814ce). However, if you're a strummer it may be best to consider the Yamaha or Martin, because the Taylor may be to bright for your purposes. YMMV, but if you have a chance play them all - - -

I went with the Martin GPC-16 Rosewood.
Very good plugged in sound and I love the built in tuner.
A bit smaller than a Dred but full of acoustic tone.

Martins with onboard Aura preamps are wonderful — I own a few myself.

Another option (to get a really good stage sound) is find a comfortable good-playing acoustic with a UST pickup and springing for a Tonedexter or Aura Spectrum DI. Your acoustic tone will be the envy of fellow musicians and sound engineers everywhere!

Yes the stock pickup in the SC13E is definitely adequate for live use. With the right IR would be even better. Highly recommended.

I add a second vote for Rainsong or another brand of CF instrument. No worries about temperatures or humidity and pleasing tone from most brands and models.

If you like to adjust your tone during your gig, get a guitar with good on board electronics or add them after market. If not, the pickup and on board electronics don't matter as much. Great advice here for you. Remember to get a guitar that feels solid versus light weight and fragile. Gigging is hard on a guitar and this one will get scratched and banged up a bit.
