At our yearly Christmas singalong with a few other hack guitarists and 25-30 singers, we start everything in G. If that doesn't work with vocal ranges, we use D or C. If we play in C my older brother plays his uke because G is C on the uke, and he can't barre an F. Real musicians can play in whatever key makes sense, I guess. For the rest of us, it is 100% about the 1 4 5 open chords.
