Do YOU care how many albums you sell?
Hi everyone, hope you're all having a nice evening. I have what might sound like an odd question to some...
I released my third album about a year ago, and my second album a little over three years ago. I've felt a bit of disappointment that my third album, which I feel is a much better body of work than my second record, hasn't outsold my second one yet. I'm not looking to make a living off of this, although it's certainly a secondary source of income for me, so this isn't a money concern. It's purely ego I suppose. Do you as a person who records music let these kinds of things inform your decisions regarding future projects, or the level of success you feel when you reflect on past work? Thanks so much, I really appreciate the help and input. I'd love to snap out of caring about this

You have not shared your music with us in the past so I don't know what type of music you are trying to sell. If you play out live you will likely sell more of your music there than online. Most people who have put out CDs sell a handful at most. Many don't bother with another CD after the first one or two. Do it for your artistic impulses rather than monetary impulses. In the exceedingly rare chance you happen to strike it big, then congrats.

CD sales are, generally, plummeting as more and more people go for digital downloads instead. make sure you have digital versions available to people.
I sold more of my 2nd CD (in person) than my 1st CD, but have sold none online (and only a handful of the 1st one online). You may sell a few at gigs, if any of your songs capture people's attention, but don't hope for CD sales to make a low-paying gig into a high-paying one!  Make music, record it, make it available publicly because you want to, not to make money. Do it for the enjoyment and fun, then any money you make is a bonus.

I just stepped into a time warp. Do I care how many albums I sell?
Wow. I haven't thought about that in at least 15 years. It's all bootleg downloads, Youtube, iTunes, Amazon these days. A lot of us could measure success by how many people steal our music. I'm pretty successful in that regard.

I should clarify, when I refer to albums I mean primarily digital. As I've tracked my income from music I've found that I'm not SELLING as much, but I'm making more money from streaming... Although I'm 30, and therefore a "youngish whippersnapper" in the eyes of some I guess I would really like it if people would actually BUY my music, even though I still make money from streaming... It's just the way things go I suppose

music sales
We have only a few copies left of our first CD. They went like gangbusters at first, then slowed right up to what I had originally expected. A few have sold on the internet but not a single download. Not one.

I was highly honored to be bootlegged during the World Cup. I don't know why there was a connection to soccer, but the interest from Brazil has been heartening. And there is nothing on this CD that is latin in any way. Haven't made a dime off this yet but it's cool to know i have fans somewhere.
