How to play Lightfoot's "Minstrel of the Dawn"
One of my YouTube subscribers asked if I could put up a tutorial on how to play Lightfoot's "Minstrel of the Dawn." I thought this might be of interest to some folks on the AGF. The song is a little tricky because it shifts from a 6/8 time scheme to a 4/4 time scheme in the middle of the song. Thanks - Glenn

Wow, Glenn, this is so cool. I am a huge Gordon Lightfoot fan and you take some of my favorites and give me the opportunity to learn them. What a treat! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. As always, wonderful playing and singing. I look forward to learning this.
Best, Jayne |

Thank you for the comments Jayne! I hope this lesson is helpful! About this song, Kerbie suggested I do this via a PM some time ago, and I thought, yes, this is an interesting song, kind of a Lightfoot biography in a song. It's a song I didn't appreciate when I was younger, but in looking at it in my later years I thought, you know, this song is really interesting and thought provoking. And that's probably why you like this song, too! Thanks for your thoughts Jayne! - Glenn

I'm in the middle of learning this one and ran across your tutorial on youtube. I was having trouble with the Bm part and you helped make sense of it ... Thanks Glenn!
I was also having trouble with one line The minstrel of the dawn is here Just Like a step'n fetchit here Couldn't make sense of that, no way no how :-) Turns out Stepin Fetchit was a vaudevillian entertainer from the 30s, but no written lyrics I've seen indicate that this is someone's name. Cheers and thanks again Glenn! |

As a suggestion, if you are able to use the thumb and three fingers of the right (picking) hand, the picking for the 6/8 is much simpler.
You pluck with the thumb, the index, the middle and ring fingers, once each, then reverse the order, middle finger, index finger, finishing the 6 notes. Repeat. Doing so eliminates the double-picking, one after the other, of the thumb on the way down and the index finger on the way up. One finger per string. |
