Default Fingerstyle. How is he doing that?



Is he just hammering the strings, like piano?

Yes but you need the pickups to make it sound decent.

Yes, and maybe compression and/or a very firm attack.

I find these abilities interesting but wonder why he doesn’t just play a keyboard as that’s basically what’s being simulating.

Here's the quintessential example. This guy (Stanley Jordan) showed up in about 1985, played this song on the Tonight Show and blew everyone's mind across the music world.

Because a keyboard can't sound like that.

And there's something special (psychologically - for audience not just performer) about producing a sound with your fingers on the strings, rather than via the soul-less mechanisms of a piano or (worse) the samples on a synth. It's not just about showmanship, but about expression.
