Default stupid question: Levy's guitar strap

Levy's straps come with a plastic hook attached at one end. I've assumed these are just brand identification doodads. Now I wonder: is it supposed to actually used as part of the strap? As in attaching it to the strap button? Thanks.

The plastic hook is attached with a length of cording that I assumed was provided to tie the strap on behind the nut for the zillions of guitars with only one strap button.
