And when you know Standard tuning, memorize Spanish tuning, cross note tuning, etc.

I think that anything you can learn is helpful and makes you a better player.

I know a guy who sets a metronome and plays every A then every A#....etc on the entire fret board. He is a bass player. great exercise. I myself know the notes of the fretboard but am not very fast...need to think some. Great thing to know well but I played for 50 years without it. I also learned standard notation about 3 years ago. Everything helps. When it comes to theory...I know a lot more than I thought I knew just by playing for a long time.

I have been looking at guitar fret boards for 50 years. I know all the notes by now.

I also play the piano. I know the note names of all the black and white keys (sharps or flats), but when playing a
piece of music it's virtually all about location. Sort of like the typewriter example.

What worked me is the old fashioned way. I got the whole series of Mel Bay Guitar Method books and spent a year working through the first 5 which pretty much covers the whole fretboard. 30 minutes to an hour a day or more practice.
