Sure. Whether it's jazz players wanting to sound like their heroes or the acoustic fingerpickers around AGF or some kid in a Warped Tour band with a Les Paul and a half-stack, lots of guitarists put a ton of time, energy and money into chasing "typical." But a few players out there are looking for ways to be at least a little bit different. Seems to me that mixing up pickups and mics is an easy and semi-subtle way to do that. More subtle than a pedalboard, for sure. And there's a lot more if you want to dive further down that rabbit hole. Parallel DAW channels with extreme filtering and compression and saturation, stuff like that.
