Default 2007 Martin OM-28 Marquis Madagascar *SOLD*

Here is an all-original, nearly mint, gently used OM-28 Marquis with Madagascar rosewood back, sides, and headstock plate. At 14 years old, this guitar’s Adirondack spruce top is seasoned and deeply resonant. Tone is balanced, open, and clear. Bass is deep without being overpowering or muddy and has great sustain. Trebles are bright and articulate with complementary overtones. Intonation is spot on and the setup is medium-low. Plenty of saddle height to go lower. Neck angle is perfect and there are zero structural issues with the guitar. It is as clean and beautiful an example as you will find—if you can find another one. I’m the second owner and have had this guitar since 2015.

The guitar has always been properly humidified and stored in a climate-controlled, non-smoking environment. On a scale from 1 to 10 (with ten being mint), I’d rate this guitar at a 9.5. Very little fret wear. No finish checks or clouding. There are two tiny dings in the top—a very small one below the bridge on the lower bout and a larger one on the upper bout near the fretboard on the high E side. Photos show each of them. The rest of the guitar is flawless. This guitar has one of the prettiest sets of Madagascar I’ve seen, and the solid mahogany neck has lots of great figuring.

The GE/Marquis series includes Adirondack spruce tops, scalloped Adirondack 1/4” bracing, and a modified V neck with 1930s heel. Nut width on this guitar is 1 3/4” and string spacing at the bridge is 2 3/8”, just like real OMs from the 1930s. As the standard top on OMs from the golden era, Adirondack spruce produces a focused clear tone and offers a higher ceiling for volume than Sitka and can be played loudly without losing clarity or breaking up. Adirondack also responds well to a light touch. The top on this guitar is tight-grained with lots of silking (medullary rays). It’s just gorgeous.

Until 2013 GE/Marquis guitars had nuts and saddles made from fossilized mammoth ivory and this guitar has the original nut and saddle from 2007. Fossilized ivory adds a bit of warmth and thickness to Adirondack’s naturally drier, snappier tone. Original Martin open back tuning machines hold tuning admirably and are in perfect working order.

A bit of history. Martin’s Golden Era and Marquis guitars occupy a middle place in the lineage between the less expensive Vintage and the more expensive Authentic guitars in Martin’s quest to recreate pre-war Martin greatness in modern guitars in terms of bracing design, construction methods, and materials. This 2007 OM-28 Marquis Madagascar is one of only 110 made in 2007-08. Some erroneously report that these were “limited edition” guitars but they were actually regular production guitars that simply were not made in great numbers. A look at the 2007 price list clears this up (not included in sale). The Great Recession of 2007-08 hit high-end guitar sales hard and by the time the economy recovered Martin had shifted its attention (and its limited supplies of Madagascar rosewood) to the Authentic series. Not every guitar made in small numbers is desirable, but many of the most desirable guitars were made in small numbers. Don’t miss out!

$4250 plus shipping.
