Default Martin 0012-28 Modern Deluxe - Wide open & responsive. VIDEO ADDED

I'm a member of the Modern Deluxe Owner's Club on the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum (UMGF). You can find my experiences with this guitar documented here in posts #87, 89, 90 and 101.

This is a terrific guitar in Martin's most comfortable size with a surprisingly big voice and in near-mint condition. It's my first Martin in more than 50 years, but I bought it because I was intrigued by the Modern Deluxe's innovations. They're impressive. This one has all of the MD Series features and a really great neck. It needed a bit more relief in the neck when I got it, but after some slight adjustments with a 4mm wrench (included), it is now perfect: silky smooth and a dream to play.

I liked its signature Martin tone when I got it, but after an extended treatment on a Tone Traveler, the voice of this guitar has really blossomed into a rich and open, beautifully blended Tone.

Martin's got plenty of enticing promotional copy about the Modern Deluxe Series on their website and elsewhere if you care to read such things. I'll just say that this particular guitar is a real good one. I've got another guitar coming in sooner than expected, so to make space for it, sadly, this one has to go to a new owner, who I'm sure will be as wowed by it as I am.

List price on a 0012-28 Modern Deluxe is $4599. If you search for this model through Google, or at Reverb, you won't find much in the way of discounts off list price. The cheapest one I could find was $4320 ($4200 plus $120 shipping).

I think this particular 0012-28 MD is a real bargain at $3900 plus shipping. I'd also be open to a trade for a 14-fret 00-28 Modern Deluxe or 000-28 Modern Deluxe.

Here's a video of this guitar when it was new, by the previous owner. As good as it was then, after my Tone Traveler treatments it's now louder, richer, and just MORE of everything.

– Liquidmetal® bridge pins
– Carbon fiber bridge plate

.

No video sounds as good as the guitar does in your lap, but here's a short clip to give an idea of what it sounds like. It was recorded directly into my MacBook Pro using its built-in microphone, so it lacks some of the warmth you'd hear in person. Best listened to with headphones.

I've got a couple of negotiations ongoing, but this beauty's still available... for now.

If I could click my heels three times and have the neck of the 0012-28 MD appear on all my guitars, I'd do it. Big fan of the Modern Deluxe series.

Now you caught my eye!

Please describe the asymmetrical neck carve.

Very cool axe

Regarding the neck, first I'll say that, with the exception of a few 'baseball bat' necks I've played, I've never had a problem adapting to a different neck, but of course, I do have preferences.

The Modern Deluxe necks have an asymmetrical profile, meaning there's a bit more wood on one side of the centerline than the other, in order to better fit the space between the thumb and first finger where the neck rests. Martin doesn't specify which side it is, but it seems logical that it would be on the bass side, allowing the fingers on the treble side a freer range of motion. So much for specs; you probably want to know how it feels.

It feels better than any neck I've ever played, and I considered keeping it just for the neck! I don't notice any asymmetry at all when playing it, which, I suppose, is a measure of how successfully it does its job.

It's slim without feeling skinny. It feels substantial in your hand, but like a sports car, it feels like there's nothing there that's not essential for speed and efficiency.

It's just a comfortable, sweet sounding guitar that's a joy to play.

Let me know if you have other questions.

I've never played any of the Martin MD line and their on-line specs put the string spacing at the saddle to be 2-5/32" which doesn't do it for me. The rest of the specs look to be very good, but my guitar buying days are probably over anyways.

Best of luck with the sale.

..... except for the OM-28MD, which is 2 1/4" at the saddle.
