I have made 3 from pear, I think. #238 in April 2014, a 000 which Roland played at WILS, #258 in June 2018 is a single 0 owned by Ben McKee (Imagine Dragons), and #303 made in July 2020 which is a JB-15 owned by Jamiejoon. I do have one more nice set of European Pearwood with nice figure. I hope I use it.

I think my next guitar will be a 000c pear Bruce. Save that set for me!

The Myrtle I am using for Jmat's guitar is a bit less fancy than other Myrtle I've used, but structurally it is at another level. We are after performance with this one, and though the previous efforts are utterly impressive, this one has a chance of being an "uber-guit'r". This material is both stiffer and heavier, and the back had to be nearly 10 thou thinner to get the "feel" I look for. Nearly as thin as I make Brazilian Rosewood!

Bruce, guys, sorry I've been away a long time... I wanted to see the pictures, but can't view them. They just show up as icons in the posts. Do I need to do something to enable the pictures?

You have to allow your browser to see "Insecure" content as I use http rather than https protocol. Alternatively, people tell me you can double click the image icon and get it to open outside the browser . . . or something like that.

Thank you, Tom. Having never had to do it, I wasn't sure of the process beyond that there is one.

Jmat's Myrtle 000 is ready to close in these pictures. I used more traditional top braces as part of the effort to achieve our tonal target.

This might be my sixth Myrtle guitar, and the first was barely a year ago! While nearly all tonewood that I build with will pass for quartersawn in most peoples estimation, this is the first time I've used truly quarter sawn Myrtle. If you look closely at the back in this picture, you may see what I mean. Due to the nature of wood, the left is slightly better than the right . . . or is it parallax?

That is solid quartering!

Quartering will pay off in structure, stability, and I expect medullary display once finish gets involved.

A few days go I made yet another tough Covid decision. I have decided not to attend Woodstock this year. They say flying on a plane is statistically safe, but that doesn't resonate for me. Neither can I relate to the idea of hundreds of people in a small room passing guitars back and forth, I just don't think it's time yet.
Unfortunately, it may not become time for this kind of close encounter again before I hang up my shingle. Business-wise it's not much of an issue, I seem to have plenty of work, but socially it is a drag. There are at least a thousand people I know to see, and I know many of their names as well, and I see them nowhere but at shows. They (you!) represent a large proportion of my social life, sadly perhaps, and it's looking like I may never see them (you!) again. Maybe it's not that gloomy; the future is unknowable. Jmat's Myrtle 000 is bound, and it is time to start his "Bulky" neck. Sanded to 180 grit, we can start to get a sense of the figure and medullary display: I can't level the graft for couple more hours as the HHG must dry first if I'm to have a flat surface. |
