From what I've read, it apparently incorporates design features typically found in the AT-17, both cosmetically and sonically. So, technically, it'd be a smaller AT-17. Perhaps that would explain the price?

Aside from that I bet the price will be a bit lower, but still worth every penny. I've played several acoustic archtops by Collings, and they know how to do it, mechanically, aurally & aesthetically. Very good investments if constant satisfaction is the goal. HE |

I have, and I was mightily impressed.
The last one was at Matt Umanov's last winter. Here is a link to the 'sold item' that I spent about a half hour with: http://www.gbase.com/gear/collings-at-17-2007 I'm pretty sure I posted here about this guitar, but whatever.........It was magnificent in all respects, and vastly underpriced for what it sold for. Pretty guitar, BUT a 16" acoustic with 2-3/4" rims is not for me. Additionally, in that price range their are a number of custom instruments that I would prefer.

Despite the small size, the guitar is supposed to have quite a big acoustic presence and great tone.

Collings makes so few arch tops, the market is jaded on what you can get elsewhere for far less.
Lots of talented luthiers in the arch top game could make you equal guitar for less than 1/2 the cost. But it doesn't say Collings on the headstock. It's a collector piece.

A "standard" Collings AT-16 sells for about $12500. That's quite an upcharge for added binding.

www.mowrystrings.com As for myself, I own a Daniel Slaman "1923 L5" hand carved archtop. I would love to own a standard Collings AT-16 when one comes down the pike. I can do without the binding. Last edited by Jabberwocky; 03-05-2015 at 01:59 AM. |
