Default Narrow neck, 14-fret, cutaway classic?

Hi, folks. I'm looking for a nylon-stringed guitar that I can finger much like a steel-string. The point is that I play finger-style, with long fingernails, but dislike the bright trebles and have trouble with a click or scrape when not striking the top strings absolutely perpendicularly. I play mostly solo blues and roots, usually accompanying my vocals. I'd like to try a nylon-stringed guitar, but the classics I own have 12-fret necks with about a 2" nut. I'd like a 14-fret neck, perhaps short scale, with a neck closer to that of my steel-stringed Taylors & Martin.

I love the sound of the Antonio Hermosa solid-top (AH50 I think), and it has a slightly narrower nut (1-7/8") and a very nice neck, but it needs amplification. (I use a Fishman SoloAmp similar to a Bose stick, but enjoy acoustic playing.) At about $290 retail, the price is certainly right for trying it our.

Any other suggestions with nylon strings, specifically cutaway and narrower nut, preferably 14 frets to the upper bout?

Many thanks!

Bill

A Yamaha NTX series guitar would be perfect for you. Either the NTX700, 900 or 1200 dependent on your budget.

I've had my Breedlove Passport N250 for a couple of years now and it's been great. Narrower neck like a steel string, cutaway, and 14-frets to the body. I sold it's "big brother" (Breedlove Masterclass Bossa Nova) last spring because it was worth more and I'd bought a bunch of Cordoba flamencos (I was looking for a "snappier" flamenco tone), but the N250 is a great value and I believe that it's worth checking-out for what you're looking for.

Never would have thought of a Breedlove. This forum is worth the price of admission! Others?

Tom -- not sure what the forum rules are for sales contacts, but I'd love to hear more. A used Breedlove Atlas Studio looks like a good choice, if the price is right (I need to allow for setup unless it's recently been set up). My email is reid (at) fewersorrowsmusic.com. Thanks!

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm about to make a deal with Tom (Blackie51) for his Breedlove Atlas Studio N250-CRE. Looking forward to it.

Cool Narrow neck, 14 fret, cutaway with nylon strings?

If you have a guitar you're comfortable with, just try some ball-end nylon strings on it. You'll have to widen the nut slots for the trebles, but that is faster than searching for a different guitar. Just sayin'...

I can't say enough about my used Yamaha CGX, I am sure the NTX series would fill the bill. I find the hybrid to have a comfortable neck, great action, suitable for classical ( ok, maybe not hardcore classical ) and folk, and with the ability to plug in, who could ask for more. The Taylors are super nice , I almost picked up a CE214 Koa Nylon....but I decided to stay married instead.

I've been playing a Cordoba fusion (cutaway 12-fret, solid cedar/rosewood lam) for months in my mate's store. I like it a lot, but the neck angle is a bit low and the price a bit high here in Oz. I haven't yet tried it plugged in, but the system is Fishman.

In any event, I decided to satisfy my unsavory urges by converting a reso to nylon string and resurrecting my near-deathrequinto. The reso conversion was a great success and will be the subject of a new thread before too long.

Good point about ball-end nylon strings, and sounds like it comes from a very experienced player, but I wonder if the nylon strings would drive a top that was made for steel. Also, I don't want to give up steel for some parts of my show, so will be selling off a classical and a 12-string that I rarely use.

Sending a check today for a used Studio N250 (to Blackie/Tom).

BTW, saw Doyle Dykes up close last evening, with a small gathering in Marble Falls, TX. Fantastic, and a very nice guy. Having heard him, I probably should spend the money for more lessons, not another guitar.

Thanks again to all for the help!
