Dating a Regal resonator
I've been tasked with dating an old Regal resonator, but can't find any accurate way to do so. There is no serial number on the outside of the instrument, only a "J" embossed on the edge of the headstock. Any ideas how to date it?
Thanks, Bryan |

Buy it some flowers and chocolate.

Is dating a resonator legal in California?

Yep, the state Supreme Court decided it was unconstitutional to forbid it.

But only because resonators are considered a minority.

Yet a very loud minority.

Darn good thing, too. Time to move out of the dark ages.

So, any idea how to actually figure out a year of manufacture on an old Regal?

Date all you want. You just can't marry it.
And forget about benefits.

You could try posting pictures on reso-nation.org. If folks there can't date it, it probably can't be dated...
Gregg McKenna, a reso luthier in CT, frequents that forum. He is an expert on all things pertaining to older resonator guitars. He specializes in squarnecks, but can probably help with round neck resos, also. Stoney |
