Taylor 812ce 12-fret for DADGAD
I wonder if anyone has experience using a Taylor 812ce 12-fret for DADGAD and other open tunings. Perhaps it sounds unconventional, given the size of the guitar, but I tried it recently with a new Andy Powers-designed version of this guitar and felt it worked extremely well. Thoughts?

812ce 12-fret & DADGAD
I bought one of these recently, specifically to use in DADGAD.
The short scale makes it easier hit those 5-fret-spanning chords (important to my aging hands) and keeps the action light & fast (which aids in playing jigs & reels with hammer-ons, etc.). Not having a 14th fret clear of the heel is not a problem for the tunes I play. The sound of the 2014 revoiced model is pretty amazing. I would not otherwise have considered a concert-sized guitar. So yeah, I think the 812cs 12-fret is really well-suited to open tunings! Why do you think it's unconventional? |

Hi Gary,
I own a Taylor 12-Fret from about 2010, and I believe this is essentially a 12-fret version of the 812CE guitar, but without the latest tweaks from Andy Powers. I tried it in DADGAD a time or two and I thought it sounded quite good. However, with the short scale, if I were going to use it in DADGAD a lot, I would likely want to beef up the thickness of at least the low-E string, because it was pretty floppy for my tastes. I have a Santa Cruz FS that I keep in DADGAD and since that guitar sounds so good, I haven't ventured into DADGAD on my Taylor 12-Fret more than once or twice. But it certainly works. - Glenn

For me, when playing Irish/Celtic in DADGAD with other instruments, one of the wonderful things about DADGAD is the ringing, harp-like tone when capoed on the higher frets... 7, 9, 10...which is physically impossible on a 12-fret. I just sold my only 12 fret for this reason. It sounded great but too limited for what I do. But if you don't capo much above the 5th fret, 12 frets are great.
