How to keep dye out of inlays
I'm working on a project where I'm putting a herringbone inlay into a piece that will later be dyed.
How can I keep the dye from getting into the inlay. I 'spect I can tape it or shellac it first, but it seems like the dye might still bleed in from the sides. Any advice? Last edited by Quickstep192; 02-26-2020 at 12:43 PM. |

I'm going to bump this post because I am wondering the same thing...
Actually, vice-versa. I'll be putting a flame maple inlay in my fretboard and will want to dye the maple once it's in...

When I was a youngster and built plastic model cars, we used to put vaseline on the windshields then wipe it off with any paint that had got on them.
You could dye the piece prior to inlaying Run an xacto knife around the inlay to prevent the dye from getting on it Carefully apply the dye with a small brush around the inlay Or shellac or tape and sand off any errant dye Combinations of above |
