the cutaway looks more venetian than florentine, or am I looking at it wrong? I guess I don't "grok" what is happening there ('shaped and glued"?)

It might be more clear in this picture - although you have to look at it upside down to see how it will attach:  Here's the cutaway on Volcano. You can see the piece between the point and the neck - that's what's being formed and glued (this is a double side being glued together) in the Wanderer pics:

The quilted mahogany on the inside was a serendipitous find by Mike this past fall in a scraps and pieces pile at a wood supply shop. Perfect for the inner of the double sides for the "tree" outers! Some nice work in progress on the rosette and headstock overlay. The woods are Macassar Ebony (as are the bindings), "tree" quilted mahogany, and spalted maple. I think that burst of spalted maple on the headstock overlay is very striking!
The top is sinker cedar, from a swamp-sunk log. Thanks for looking!
