Default Build Thread: OM The Kauri. Kauri/Heart Rimu

Hi everyone,

I'm a Luthier based in the beautiful Bay of Islands in the Far North of New Zealand. I am blessed to live here, and to have nature as a constant source of inspiration for my guitars. Lately I have moved away from the heavy embellishment we are used to seeing. Instead I'm trying to keep things simple yet elegant, organic and sympathetic with nature.
We have some incredible tonewoods in New Zealand. I have some favourites for sure, such as Kauri, Heart Rimu, matai and Puriri which are featured in this build thread. All the timbers are either recycled or sustainably sourced which is very important to me. I also think they add value to the instrument as there are some terrific stories associated with these woods.
I hope you enjoy the build.

Specs.

This guitar is a OM The Kauri design.
Soundboard - recycled Kauri
Back and sides- Heart Rimu
Neck-recycled Matai
fretboard,bridge-recycled Puriri

Lets try that again shall we.

Cheers,

Christian.

This is the set of Heart Rimu I am using, Its going to look amazing with some finish on it.

Truing up the two halves with a shooting board.

Gluing up the back with a Quoin jig. So quick and easy.

Marking out the shape with the OM template.

Cutting out the shape on the scroll saw.

Still cutting.

Thickness sanding the back on the drum sander.

Back clamped in place on template ready for routing.

Routing the mitre.

Have not seen this style of bracing before, I wonder if it is your idea??
Also wonder how you find it compares to conventional X bracing both from structure and sound.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the comments,
I don't know if anyone else has tried this bracing pattern before.
I came up with this solution because of the placement of the soundholes. Its just a simple A frame and X brace. It has defenitely given my instruments more volume, structurally its proving great too.
The traditional placement of the soundhole is typically quite a weak part of the top. Moving the soundhole into the upper bout made sense to me, it also allowed me to explore other designs for soundholes.
When I build I a traditional instrument I generally go back to the X brace.
But this configuration is my favourite aesthetically and sonically.

Cheers.

Christian.
