New to Forum, Greetings from a Lefty
Greetings fellow Acoustic Guitar Forum members -
I have been reading the forum as a guest for a while now and have found some valuable information and some interesting opinions. I finally decided to officially join as a member. I am a relative late comer as a player. I did not start playing until age 38 and have been taking weekly lessons for just over 3 years now. It was always a goal of mine to play acoustic guitar but it never really seemed to happen (maybe being a lefty and never really having the opportunity to pick up a left handed guitar had something to do with it). Anyway, better late than never. I learned the basics on a Washburn acoustic but quickly graduated to a Martin D-16GT that I am still playing today (I also own a Little Martin that accompanies me on business trips). However, I am glad to say I recently put in an order for one of the new 2012 D-18's. However, Martin does not currently have any lefties in stock and it will be about a 4 month wait (so I guess it will actually be a 2013 model by the time it arrives). All good things are worth waiting for. What do I play? Beatles, Hendrix, Cream, CCR, Neil Young, etc. etc. I would be interested in any opinions on how big of a difference I can expect from going from a D-16GT to one of the new D-18's? I have seen and held one of the new D-18's (right handed) and heard right handed players play them but have unfortunately never played one. It is sort of a gamble but this is part of the left handed players curse. Regardless, I am not worried about it as I am sure I will love it just fine. Thanks, and, once again, glad to be a part of the forum. |

Welcome to the Forum, MotorCityLefty!
I'm sure you'll hear all sorts of advice, on your questions. I am not well-versed in Martins, so have no comment, left or right! I'm also a lefty, but play righty guitars...a lot of lefties, in my family, but my grandmother was the rare ambidextrous person, who could do anything with either hand, including writing. Anyway, good luck with your new Martin, when you get it!!!

Hi MCL,
Welcome to the forum! Glad to have you here. Hopefully you will love that new Martin D-18 when it arrives. Four months -- that's a long wait for you. At least you have the D-16 GT to play in the meantime. I can't offer you much help on comparing the guitars since I have no experience with the D-16GT but I know the D-18 well. Generally, mahogany back and side guitars are a little more balanced towards the midrange, they have a little less deep bass and bass coloration with a more clear sounding bass. The trebles on a mahogany guitar lack the characteristic chime of rosewood, but again, they are more clear. The D-18 is a classic -- I hope you are happy! - Glenn |

Hey Motor City - Welcome to the AGF. I too have a Martin D-16GT and would love to upgrade to the 2012 D-18. I have yet to play a 2012 D-18 (none locally) but it is based on the D-18v and I really like that model.
How did the D-18 sound when someone else played it (understanding that the shop had a righty?)? |

Wow, I like the speed of the replies. Thanks for the welcomes.
The new D-18 that I heard being played sounded fantastic to me. Loud, rich, great throaty tone. I have been thinking of an upgrade from my D-16GT for a while and it eventually came down to the 2012 D-18 and a standard D-28. I have played lefty D-28's and HD-28's. Each outstanding and I liked both very much. But I can only afford one. After going back and forth I decided on the D-18. Maybe I just like that mahogany sound. Also, being a couple hundred bucks less didn't hurt either. |

The "highest level" brand new lefty Martin that I have ever personally seen for sale was a D-16RGT. |
