Default new to me D18 owner after being a stubborn HD28 guy...

I just got a D18 after basically only ever playing and owning an HD28 for the last 12 years and I totally get it now.

got a great deal on it too ($1000) sorry for the deal brag. it had loose binding so no one else seemed to want it via the Facebook market place. the guy I got it from thought it was a 2015 but it was actually a very early 2012 which is the year they got "re-imagined". anyways, $50 later to get the binding fixed I am happy as a clam and cant wait to get it back from the luthier in a couple days.

praise be.

Nice story. Based on this experience, what do you think are the relative pros and cons?

Nice. That’s a good deal. I’d probably jump in that too. But I discovered a Seagull S6 and my dread needs are more than covered.

Anyways, congrats!

in order to not pin my guitars against each other and make me believe one is better than the other I truly don't believe there are pros and cons to either.

with that being said I just love the classic feeling of the D18, there is something so beautiful and understated about its sound and design. to me it almost gives me the feeling of like "the first guitar". if a child drew a guitar they would draw a d18. maybe its that my HD28 is ambertone with the fancy inlay and all that jazz.

but always inspired by a different tool as much as I dont want to be a materialist about it and as they say "there's a song in there" and playing the d18 just makes me feel like there's a wealth of new songs in there that maybe I wouldn't have written on my HD28 (but im sure I would have) haha.

practicality wise it also came with a pre installed pick up which is great cause I didn't want to drill one into my hd28 so now I have a designated "gig" guitar as well.

You know, I've been pining for a D-18 for several months now and going back and forth with mental negotiations as to why I don't really need one because I have and love my HD-28.

Now you come along with this post.

Congrats on your D-18...they are iconic guitars! Plenty of room for an 18 and a 28! Enjoy!

Once I had my HD-28 as a complement to my J-45, I expected to be dread-set. It wasn’t long, though, that I realized the D-18 is a third distinct dread. It’s also the one I keep medium strings on, and that adds to its unique voice and feel.

Everyone needs a D-18.

hah! I love "dread-set".

I ordered medium Martin strings for it too. admittedly im not really sure what strings I usually use? I rarely break them and I like dead strings so I had a moment of panic when they asked me what strings I wanted when I dropped it off for a set up haha.

Congrats on the great find on a D-18. I would have definitely bought that had I seen it.

I used to be a rosewood back and sides guy, but the older I've gotten, the more I appreciate mahogany. All three of my acoustics are hog....

Congratulations. A couple weeks ago I got a D-18. It’s my first mahogany back and sides guitar. All my other guitars are Rosewood, but I’m really starting to appreciate the sound of spruce over mahogany.

The reimagined D-18 I purchased was a fine, fine guitar. I can best describe the sound as balanced and “snappy” (in a good way).

In my mind, if there was ever such a thing, it was a great all a-rounder. Broke my heart to sell it but circumstances dictated.
