I bind all of my fingerboards unless the customer requests otherwise. This has been true for 25 years or more. The mini-D is bound with Snakewood, the pear 000 is bound with ebony, and the neck on the new P L00 has not been made yet, but will likely be ebony bound.

I have good memories of playing your guitars, Bruce, as well as Howard’s at festivals and at Schoenberg’s over the years. The pear is gorgeous and I have always loved the shape of your cutaway. Beautiful lines and I prefer it to either a Venetian or Florentine.
I’m curious about the dimensions of your mini D. I’ve always liked dreads that are a bit scaled down. I have a Kramer Prairie Grass that I love. I’m enjoying this thread! Best, Jayne |

My Mini-D’s have taken a variety of styles and dimensions, being 12, 13, and 14 frets to the body, and styled after both Gibson and Martin D style guitars. What they have in common is being closer to 15” wide than 15 5/8”, and closer to OM/000 depth than D or Jumbo depth. What they have in common is a surprisingly D like tonal signature. I did string up the latest one yesterday, and it is incredibly full and powerful in the low end. The customer has already got two of my actual Dreads, a mahogany and a BRW, and I am betting the Mini-D is as strong, we’ll see very soon.

It is much harder yet to see the ebony binding on an ebony fingerboard. The give-away is that the fret ends do not show.

Mini-D is done.
It often happens that an instrument exceeds my expectations, but the BRW Mini-D is beyond the pale. I expect to deliver it this week, and maybe the customer will be overwhelmed enough to speak up.
Here is a link to the page I just made for the Adi/BRW Mini-D we re discussing. And a picture or two: Last edited by Bruce Sexauer; 03-20-2022 at 05:55 PM. Reason: add content |

“It is official, and can be read on the internet.”
Hi Bruce—Congratulations on stepping back, albeit at a distance yet to be fully determined! It has indeed been a great run—all the beautiful builds and sharp insights posted here have truly lifted up the forum. And the instruments, one suspects, will be around for generations, attesting to what a renaissance of lutherie we have all been lucky enough to be alive during. All the best, Richard |

I read the news! Congratulations Bruce, quite a run indeed. I am delighted to own some of your guitars and play them often. In fact i played the pernambuco and the myrtle today. Sounded great. I am sure the guitars you will yet make will be wonderful. I also suspect that for my purposes the ones you you made for me could be equalled but not surpassed. Thanks!

I got the sealer on the new P L00 today, and have pictures to prove it. Actually, I got a coat of Varnish on as well, but no proof yet. |

My next to the last private commission, #320, made from White spruce over European Pear, has been buffed and I am waiting for the glue to heat whereupon I will glue the neck to the body.
