Laptop Noisy ~ Recorder Calling
Not liking the buzz from the laptop. Acoustics in my room are already bad enough. And going further away makes operating difficult. Seriously considering going back to digital recorder of some kind for ease of use and quiet.
Any ideas, tricks, suggestions for my existing setup ~ or for what I should get to replace it? Thanks, Triston |

My microphones when recording my mandolin are about 2 feet (SDC at bridge) and 3-1/2 feet (LDC at neck/body joint) from my Toshiba Portege laptop. I've never picked up any hint of the fan noise from the laptop, even though the fan runs any time I'm recording for more than a few seconds at a time. But one microphone points almost directly away from the computer and the other is at right angles to it.
How close are your microphones to the instrument? And what pattern are they? I could see Omni mics picking up laptop noise or Cardioid mics if they were pointed more or less toward the laptop. And if the mics are more than a foot or so away from the instrument you'll pick up all kinds of garbage from the room, so that's a no-no for reasons beyond just computer noise.
