Default I hate small talk. I must be Finnish.

Fascinating how cultures around the world vary.

So, how's the weather up your way? Pretty changeable around here. But heck, ya gotta expect that this time of year, right?

I might not be Finnish (Actually Norwegian/French) but I'm not a big fan of talk just to fill a void! I have a pre-paid phone plan that allows me 1000 minutes a YEAR which is plenty and the surplus "rolls over". Serious text/talker uses that much in a month. Just check out the crowd in the background of a TV shot at a sporting event----there are several people staring at their cell phones really intense on something else!

To appreciate some silence, just be around someone who CONSTANTLY talks saying nothing of any import! I think the Finns have it about right!

I knew a Finnish guy reasonably well in college. He certainly exemplified this level of reserve. He was a lovely gentle chap but trying to engage him in idle small talk was virtually impossible and he would never initiate any kind of conversation of this type.

He did open up on the rare occasions when he'd had a few beers.

So that's why Kimi Raikkonen always remains monosyllabic during interviews.

Why do people who hate small talk post so frequently on social media?

I don't know, Tico. Your conversation level on the AGF seems just about right. Maybe in person you might be a little more laconic?

I have a lot of posts on the AGF, which means that I have contributed a lot of comments over the last 10 years. In person, however, I am relatively quiet. I am somewhat introverted and have a goal-oriented personality. I am comfortable spending a lot of time alone, and I think these traits are helpful for learning to play the guitar.

I have no Finnish or for that matter, Scandinavian in my ethnic background. I am 50% Irish, 25% German and Austrian, and 25% English. However, in social situations, I have learned to carry on small tank to help myself and everyone else feel comfortable. It's an art that people can learn.

I'm much like you.
I'm an introvert, but not inept socially.
When I have to I engage very well with others, in all situations.
I doubt I appear uncomfortable to anyone.
But when with others I do feel like I'm "on" and my batteries are being drained.

I heard once that extroverts get their batteries charged by being around others but introverts get theirs drained.
Then, extroverts get their batteries drained by being alone, yet introverts get theirs charged.

This is true for me, in person but not online.
Maybe because online does not involve the same social expectations and demands.
You're alone in your room.
You can formulate your thoughts as slowly as you wish.
You can take an hour break, or a day.
You can block people who offend.
There's more control.
It's safer.

While I hate small talk I LOVE a good meaningful conversation with an interesting person ... but only one person at a time and preferably the two of us are alone.
Put a glass of wine in my hand and I can hold my own and even enjoy myself at a small party.

FWIW extroversion is valued in my country, America.
I hear introversion is more valued in some countries, like Japan.
