Wonderful Dennis, thanks for the videos also especially the side bending, I had not seen that done in real time! I think the fill in back set is just as special as the first!

I put a sheet of UHMW under the top with another disc over the rosette and hold those in place with a 50 lb weight. Using a water based glue and sealing the area with the UHMW plastic allows all the wood fibers in that area to swell and the rosette to dry slowly over night. This helps to produce near flawless joinery as all those pieces settle into their new home.

Yes. yes, yes! I can personally guarantee it!

But be very careful. It can have a significant effect on your wallet.

Absolutely! ... but heed Cigar Fan’s advice. You may bump into Eire too. It’s his favorite hang out.

As if that wasn't enough for one day we have back bracing.

The materials.

Marking the center brace position.

Braces glued and held in place on the go bar deck.

A short video showing the last pieces of center brace going in place.

Back is braced and will sit overnight under go bar pressure.

Back to the sides. Here is a short video of the bent sides removed from the bender. And another short video showing a bent side set moving to lamination.

The first side set clamped on the lamination mold.

And after drying, removed from the mold. The second set takes it's place.

Fits in the body mold with very little coaxing.

I am really fond of Tim's Slope Shoulder shape. More really interesting stuff to come. Stay tuned .......

This guitar is a beauty! Love the rosette and the back. Fabulous work - both the guitar build and the pictures.

That is one nice set of Sapele, should make a fine guitar, and '59 Sitka?, I like the sound of that.
I've never seen laminated piano key used for nut and saddle, is ivory as hard as bone or a bit softer?, very interesting. That will be one heck of a beautiful rosette, this will be a fun guitar to watch go together
Being a fan of cigar and pipe tobacco myself I can tell you, Tim's wood room ranks right up there.
Since I sing when I play, the fundamentals found in the Mahogany family of woods makes for a great voice companion. And I have one of Tim's MiniMac guitars sporting a '59 Sitka top. It is awesome.
As Tim and I were discussing nut and saddle, I had the same hardness question. Since warmth is a desired characteristic he mentioned trying laminated piano keys. I can't wait to give it a go.

Your rendering of the rosette is stunning, should be a breeze for Tim to whip that up when he has your photo to work from!!! Go Tim Go.
Thanks Tom. That Sitka is amazing. You wouldn't believe the tap tone and sustain. I have high hopes for this one.

Beautiful piece of wood you've chosen, and that mosaic rosette is simply gorgeous -- literally a piece of art in its own right. I'll be eager to hear this baby come McJam season.
Well, when you take up residence I hope you still allow tours to come through.
See you at McJam!

I enjoy local builds for the very reason the customer can come by the shop, touch and feel the woods, and pick out the exact woods he or she wants. Can't always happen, but nice when it does.
Enjoy the ride. Looks to be a good one!
Ken
Thanks Ken. Picking woods with Tim was definitely a highlight. There is soooo much there to look at and listen to. I love the ride!

And then you will have several different targets to hit. Or at least you can say, "Well, this bit of your rosette is like the 3rd drawing, this section is like the first..." And so on.
Kudos to both, it will be a wonderful guitar. Love that Sapele! (Just like Eddie said.)
Steve
Thanks Steve. I took it easy on Tim. Only gave him one version but it was a doosy! See you at B.I.G.er!!!!

Thanks for following along Jayne. Tim and Mary are quite the pair. The build impecable and the documentation complete (the flood of pics, and we all can't get enough pics, right?).

Brisk is right! Yesterday was an incredible day. As many years as I have been doing this, don't think I ever posted as many pictures in one day! Wow!

Here is a short video showing Tim cleaning up the squeeze out from side lamination.

Then the clean sides are joined with the neck and tail blocks.

The side assembly is then placed in the mold and marked with chalk so Tim can see how much to sand off the rim edges.

Measuring the depth at the neck block. That's why they call this a Slim Slope Dred.

Addition of the kerfing is next.

Here are a couple short videos of the kerfing being installed. Video 1 | Video 2

All kerfed ready to dry a spell.

Thickness sanding the top.

After level sanding the rosette looks sharp!

Measuring deflection of the top at thickness.

Marking the guitar outline on the bracing side. Video

If you look close you can see evidence of some bearclaw in this top. It will likely be more evident under finish.

Cutting the soundhole.

Now we move into a veiled part of the build. Secret sauce is in the top bracing. Here is the hide glue Tim will use.

I have a feeling things will go dark for the rest of today.

WOW, WOW, WOW-WOW, WOW!

Thank you for sharing this incredible build Dennis.
Your vision, Tim's talent and Mary's watchful eye...a winning combination for sure!

Is the heel cap going to be mosaic as well?

Thanks for following along. Actually, the heel cap will be inlaid with abalone. A nice big piece.
