Hi Fred!

Thanks for your thoughts and comments! I certainly find this song very likable! Somebody is probably writing songs like this somewhere, but I'm not aware of their music.

The Everly Brothers came along in the late 50s and early 60s when early rock'n roll music was at its infancy. The music is more innocent, fairly basic in terms of complexity, especially in comparison to the best of the sophisticated American Songbook era of the 30s, 40s, and 50s.

I read an interesting book called "The B Side" recently about the shift in music that took place at this time. There was a lot of hand wringing from the best of the songwriters about how horrible the "kids' music" was, but nobody put the Everly Brothers in the horrible category. They really influenced so many famous bands to come, like the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, the Byrds, etc.

The Everly Brothers' harmony was fairly simple, based mostly on diatonic thirds. But because they were brothers with exceptionally good pitch (and it always helps to be young), they really had a pristine sound in their blended voices.

I really think they had a magic sound.

Hi Kev!

Thanks so much for your comments!

It is a trip down memory lane -- for me, too! In 1962 I was 14 years old, so I very much remember this song on the radio. In fact, at about age 16 I bought an album of the Everly Brothers' "Golden Greats" and I'm sure I wore the grooves right off that LP.

Regarding the productions, sometimes I have gone to the trouble of doing the whole band thing. I did that on my version of Paul Simon's "Sound of Silence," for example. It takes more effort, but in the case of "Crying in the Rain," I really wanted to hear that electric guitar with tremolo. Once I put that in, I felt that the bass would help, too.

On the original recording, if there are acoustic guitars in there, it's pretty hard to hear them. So the electric guitar is quite prominent. Here's their original recording from 1962:

Thanks again, Kev!

I was 12 when this song came out. The Everly Brothers were another prime example of the wonderful harmony that comes out of growing up as siblings in a musical family.

Hi SpruceTop,

Oh, cool! You are just two years younger than I am, so we are very close in age. You are lucky to have grown up in a musical family.

My mother loved the Everly Brothers and she was always singing along with them on the radio. After a while, I did, too!

Thank you Fred!

I'm so glad you thought this came out okay!

Yes, it does seem like I have a whole band there -- we are lucky to have such great recording devices and systems today!

I don't usually go to the trouble of doing all the band parts, but on this song, I really wanted to hear that electric guitar with tremolo. Once I added that in, I thought, oh well, I should add the bass, too!

Thanks for your comments Fred!

Old Songs are the best. The tools you have and use to reproduce them are impressive as well.

Excellent work Glenn. Keep those wonderful songs coming!
The vocals were so Everly
The reverbed tremolo was spot on for that era.
The percussion was just right.
Once again you nailed it!
Very well done! (and I mean it)
