Default What kind of guitar does Doug Young play?

i watch and listen to his videos. His playing and and the sounds are gorgeous. I know if I get the guitar he plays it won't magically make me an amazing guitar player.
Still, I'd like to know.

He's collected some beauties over the years. He has a killer cedar/Koa Ryan that I have heard him play live. He's a wonderful player and composes lovely melodies. His music, technique and performance are so engaging I almost forget about the guitar. (I said almost because I am a guitar geek after all!)

Best,
Jayne

Doug also owns, I believe, three guitars by Ed Claxton.

He also owns a cocobolo Wingert E that I played when I was ordering my Wingert back in 2003. He was kind enough to meet me at Gryphon's and let me play his E which helped me further nail down the specs that I wanted. Very similar guitar to the one I ordered except mine is a 12 fretter. Doug has a nice collection of hand builts and does a nice job of bringing out the unique voice of every one of them.

Best,
Jayne

I saw Doug with a True North guitar about a decade ago.

Doug might chime in himself

In the past few years I know he's favored a Claxton.

Keep in mind some of the recordings are using a guitar pickup.

I found some notes I took from when I took a helpful lesson with Doug. I asked him about what guitar he played on the video of his arrangement of Shenandoah:
Ryan Mission Grand Concert, Koa back and sides, Cedar top

It is interesting for everyone to be able to see the answers.

Hi gang. I think you've figured out most of the guitars I have! On my you tube videos, I try to specify what I'm playing, unless I've missed one. I do have some videos where the guitar is not mine, and might be either borrowed, or perhaps I was doing a review of an instrument, so I don't own everything on my YT channel.

I have a hard time choosing a favorite, they're like kids, they're each a little different, and I like them each for different reasons. I do tend to be partial overall to the Claxton's and my Ryan Mission. But then there's the others, too. Hmm...

Marshall, that True North was an interesting guitar, I sold it a long time back, probably shouldn't have :-) I don't think I even have any recordings with it.

Rick, I never record anything with pickups unless it's a pickup demo of some kind, like the ToneDexter demo, where the pickup+ToneDexter is the whole point. I'm always trying to get a better sound out of a pickup for live use, tho even there, with a good sound system and quiet room, I'll gladly prefer a mic. So pickups are an ongoing (never-ending?) exploration, but especially for recording, I'm more interested in guitars that sound good acoustically.

Antaren, thanks, glad you like the sounds. If there's a recording or video you have in mind, let me know, and I can probably clarify what guitar I was using. Yes, Shenandoah was recorded, both on my CD and the video (long ago...) with the Koa Ryan. That guitar's taken a few hard knocks over the years, but it's hanging in there, and still sounds great.

Not sure if you still have it, but that Greenfield I tried once is also very special. Let me know if you get tired of it

Hey Roger, I do have that one still, and have been thinking about downsizing a few. Maybe that guitar would suit you better than me. Glad to talk about it, give me a shout if you're really interested.

Doug, Unless my memory is way out of whack, I remember driving you I think to Tom Higgins' house in Stillwater, MN. probably from Bill Hammond's place? I don't even remember what the circumstances were. I do think that it was the first time that I had been there and we had a hard time finding it. Perhaps that is the same time that Marshall was talking about.
