Tone certainly does come through. If a person means to be condescending or rude or a "know it all" its not hard to convey that in a post. I was referring to many posts where people get offended by things that really weren't meant to be offensive. And I'm not saying that one shouldn't respond in some manner, but just that it doesn't always warrant getting your knickers in a knot. You know what I mean?

  3. Practice a couple hours per day towards said goal.

I enjoy my expensive guitar, but it didn't make me sound better - it just made my mistakes resonate longer

This is the best advice for any AGF newbie. When Gassing for a new guitar that you didn't even know existed two days ago, turn the computer off. Go play what you have. Work towards achievable goals.

Yes, I do.

Another interesting dimension is the way humor differs from place to place. Sarcasm and irony feature more in British humor, for instance, than they seem to in US humor. As a result, a post that was intended as harmless banter can be deemed 'not nice', depending on who is responding.

And that may just the biggest factor in this whole thing. As an analogy, I grew up in NJ and lived there for 35 years. I've been in S.D. for the past 11 years and they certainly have a different point of view regarding humor and sarcasm. In NJ, the closer you are to someone the more you rib them about things (at least when I lived there with the friends I grew up with). Here, in SD, I get the feeling that my humor isn't appreciated much (in general).

Merciless ribbing is a big part of genuine friendships round my part of the world.
I'd feel very left out and undervalued, if my pals didn't twist my smart-arsed comments straight back at me !

Default The AGF Commandment thread for Newbies

Don't spend more time on this forum than you actually do playing and enjoying your guitar/guitars.

Don't waste money and time chasing the perfect guitar or holy grail. It doesn't exist. But there is a guitar out there that is perfect for you. It's different for everyone. You'll know it when you play it. In the mean time, enjoy the ones that you have. You just might discover that you already found it.

Recording yourself (playing and singing) is a great way to listen critically and improve your playing. As an added benefit, you can accompany yourself too!

This one took me a while to figure out and/or accept:

Just because you might like listening to a particular style of music doesn't mean you'll enjoy playing it.

When playing the guitar - HAVE FUN!!

Don't worry about wiping it down, what the exact humidity it, what brand of strings you have on it at the moment, how set up it is (unless interferring with the prime rule above), what brand it is, what size it is, what wood it is...

All the other stuff will come all too soon, but - HAVE FUN!!

And if Mr. *********** is in the thread, don't bother getting involved. It'll only lead to frustration and a desire to break the forum's prime rule of being nice.

So if that's the case, go back to your guitar and - HAVE FUN!!

Do not you mind if I rephrase? (as I see it):

Every guitar meant to be played!

and

The guitar you got is perfect for now, here, as what it is, and for what you are.
ASA you deserve the better (another) one it pops up out of nowhere, somewhere, or wherever. Believe me.
