From the picture you posted, the action at the nut looks ok. Where it is at the twelfth fret, may be an issue.
As far as strings go, try DR Sunbeams or any round core string.

I went to the guitar store and got myself a pack of Martin Acoustics strings. Feels great and sounds great!
