Thanks Bob, much appreciated! ...I much prefer to play without a pick for most things, however playing at shows the pick gives me different tones and dynamics. But at home it's 90% flesh n fingers

Thanks again mate!

Hi Eric,

I'm trying to go "pickless" while learning to fingerpick...but my strumming without a pick is WEAK!

It looks like you are holding your hand the same way you would if you were playing with a pick? Which fingers are you using to brush the strings?

Thanks for any advice

Hi Bob,

* It depends on the tone I want and how I want to attack the strings as well as what is the best way I'm able to play the passage.

** In the video I am using my index fingernail like holding a pick like you said. That nail has a hard time growing cause I chew it up playing constantly.

*** However, sometimes I add in and/or substitute with my middle fingernail and even my ring finger, sorta flamenco-like. For light soft strums I'll downstroke with my thumb-flesh and upstroke with thumb-nail.

**** Start with the easier way like I do in the video, but know if you go all Pete Townsend, you may loose a nail!

Cheers,

eric

Your welcome! Keep them healthy, I've worn my index to a nub over the years. Btw another tip, Biotin helps keep nails healthy.

Beautiful job Brother. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. This song has always moved me and your rendition conveyed the emotion that Mark put in it when he wrote it. The beautiful simplicity of this song is as great a testament to the genius of Mark Knopfler, as any of his most sophisticated masterpieces. You brought this song to life.

That one always brings to mind a host of old and current faces. My farm boy uncle that couldn’t fulfill his dream of study at University of Indiana because he didn’t come home from Korea. Some early friends from Fort Bragg who lost their daddy in Vietnam when mine came home. My brother who came from Iraq but I am not sure he is totally ok.

Hard song to hear.

So I listened to the original a few times & came up with my rendition. I've only played it a few times so it ain't polished, but I was in the moment & memory of my brother and turned the camera on....

** Recorded with just an ol' Canon camera and my lil' Martin 000-18 unplugged, old strings, morning hair, scratchy voice and all...LOL!

Enjoy in HD with earbudz, thank you for listening; for John & one love to all!

000's and OM's are my favorites guitars. Your voice is great, and is similar like Marc
