This is one that gets me every time . . . written by a friend of mine (and one my big influences as a songwriter):

Another friend of mine. I told him he needed a bridge (so I sorta take credit for it), but he wrote it. The second verse/chorus always get me:

He Ain’t Heavy….
After scrolling through all these pages was surprised that The Hollies “He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother” isn’t included. For the obvious personal reasons this one tears me up, and our own guitarguango’s rendition is every bit as moving as the original.

There are quite a few songs that can make me and others cry. I chose the one below. I also think, a song is really good when it sounds good in a sparse arrangement and in different versions.

More Than a Feeling has always affected me as an emotional rock masterpiece.
It came out in 1976 during some major episodes in my life - beauty, hope, loss, uncertainty and some life-changing decisions. I hear it today and marvel at the fragility of youth and life itself, with a big lump in my throat. Last edited by tinnitus; 01-31-2023 at 10:54 PM. |

Many have mentioned Elephant, Tecumseh Valley, Where have you been, Carmelita, Sam Stone….I would add He Stopped Loving Her Today by George Jones and Sing me Back Home by Merle.

The Coast No Man Can Tell by Bill Fay gets me in the feels. I gather from the song it's a goodbye song to his brother or friend dying of maybe cancer or an illness. Bill is about 70 when the song was recorded I believe, and hearing his aging voice sing about this is just heart breaking and really throws me into the deep.
Just him and a piano. https://youtu.be/6rYiAG6b-RM |

It's really the last half of the song that will cause me to choke up if I'm trying to sing this song: And some people from the city Took the girl far away To a new mom and a new dad Kisses and hugs everyday Her first day of Sunday school the teacher walked in And a small little girl stared at a picture of Him She said, "I know that Man up there on that cross I don't know His name, but I know He got off" 'Cause He was there in my old house And held me close to His side As I hid there behind our couch The night that my parents died |

Oh yes, my mom had 4 boys, she used to cry every time it came on the radio way back in the day. Great song, and Jimmy's version is wonderful.

Yeah...I wouldn't even attempt it. I have a difficult enough time disconnecting from the lyrics of lesser songs. I'd never get thru that one?
