Default nylon string recommendations, please

I am jumping back into classical playing after a 35 year hiatus… It’s been a long time since I’ve purchased classical guitar strings… Catch me up to speed on some good ones to consider as I’m driving to guitar Center now!

Oh, also, would greatly appreciate any video links to YouTube on how to best install nylon strings on a slotted headstock… Want to make sure I minimize slippage!

I doubt you'll find much of a selection at Guitar Center. I'd recommend checking out Strings By Mail, who is one of our sponsors. You should see a link to them in the sponsor section on the home page. The problem with asking your question is that you'll get as many answers as responses. My "current" favorite is Savarez 510MR with Cantiga bases, Alliance carbon (G) and Crystal (B,E) nylon trebles. I also like the Andrew York Silver Custom set. My basic requirement is a carbon G and a nylon E. Everything else is negotiable.

Thank you for these quick responses! I did find some Labella 2001 medium tension in the “clearance“ bin at guitar center… Grabbed two packs @ $7 apiece. Keep posting your recommendations, though… I’m sure I’m going to be trying different strings over the next little bit.

It's difficult to recommend a set, as others have said above, but D'Addario
EJ45 or EJ46 are good reliable sets, and useful as a reference if nothing else.

Here is the late guitarmaker John Gilbert's string tying method: http://www.schrammguitars.com/stringingmethod.html

I think it's wise to use the strings for which the nylon string guitar you have were intonated by the luthier/manufacturer. For example, for the Cordoba C7 it's Savarez Cristal Corum High Tension 500CJ. It will always sound good this way.

+1. Trying out different strings can be fun, but be prepared for intonation issues if you stray too far away from the original strings.

I strung my Godin up with Oasis GPX+ strings, and the intonation went down the drain. Which is a shame, because they are great strings IMO.

Went back to the trusted D'Addarion EJ46s and problem solved.

I really, really like Hannabach strings, particularly the super high tension strings

I like the D'addario EJ45C's (Composite) much better than the standard version.

Always sounded the best to me.

I use Daddario’s. Normal tension nylon basses. Normal tension fluorocarbon G and B strings. Normal tension Nylon high E string. After trying many different brands and combinations, this sounds best to me.

Default Augustine Blue (medium tension)

I'm in the same boat as you.... been away from classical guitar for decades and just coming back. I have tried several of the new composite sets but last month I went back to Augustine Blues and I am sticking with them. Possibly the old dog/new trick syndrome!! But they sound great to me.
