So I stumbled upon one of the Custom Shop Historic series J-45 1942 Banner guitars a couple days ago. Being the first one to see it on the site, I got first dibs on it. It was a chunk of money (almost 5000 euros) so I asked to think about it for a day.
I got to thinking, I really really like my Taylor AD17e Blacktop. I don't need another guitar, and this new J-45 would need a pickup installed, and what am I gonna do with the Taylor then? Also playing a role : I wish the J-45 had more of the 50-60's look with the big pick guard and cherry sunburst. If it had've been a 1942 Banner with cherry sunburst instead (but same thin lacquer), 50's pickguard, a more modern neck (no "V") and a good pickup, I would've been all over it. Seems like I just want a J-45 because I've got it in my head that I want a J-45, even though I've got Taylor's version of a J-45. And I should wait for that perfect J-45 instead of taking something that I know will be a stellar guitar, but I don't really need and is not exactly what I'm looking for. So I told them, not this one, I'd wait for a J-45 50's faded. Despite this, I have a nagging feeling that I let a good deal go by ... where are the flaws in my logic? Or is it spot on?

Did you actually play the J-45? I think if so, you wouldn't be 2nd guessing yourself, regardless of your final decision. Suffice it to say, as similar as them may, (kinda, ) look, the Gibson and the Taylor are different guitars altogether.

Hey
Naw, I didn't play it. The shop is almost two hours drive from my house. They'd offered to send it here for me to try with 30 day return policy, OTOH I'd still need to put in the four hours driving to have the pickup installed should I decide to keep it. I thought about "what the heck, just let them send it" but somehow that didn't feel right since I was leaning towards not taking it.

You’ve got it in your head that you want a J-45 because you want a J-45. That was me 13 months ago.
Get a J-45.

I have yet to play or hear a Taylor that can hold a candle to a good/great J45.

I think those J45 faded seem like really nice guitars. Hopefully you can check one out in person.

The banner 1942 J45s are nice guitars, but you are going to have to like the neck and it's pretty different from a Taylor neck. The 'standard' J45 neck is a nice, fast, low profile neck that is likely more akin to what you are used to. The banner reissues are expensive guitars - you have to really like it to make it worth it.
