Hard to tell, maybe #3 or #4.....I've got some sets like this one if another option would be helpful.

Australian blackwood is in the Acacia family and grows like a weed, no reason not to use a perfect set-coming from a non-luthier.

I like #4.

#2 is pretty cool looking, but maybe not so good on stability. I'd want to badger it a bit with moisture and drying and see how it behaves before using it.

The other two look fine, but especially the back on #1 is visually boring for my taste.

Rather boring looking blackwood if you ask me.

If it's a good deal, I'd consider #3 then #1 then #4 but not #2 but really it just looks like basic straight grain blackwood with very little figure.

Make sure it's decently quarter sawn too, which sets 1,3 &4 look to be but can't really tell without looking at the end of the board.

Make sure you're buying from a reputable tonewood seller that you trust otherwise if you don't have the wood in your hands, you're gambling.

Try http://www.australiantonewoods.com/ Tim has very good Tasmanian blackwood at a very fair price IMO.

None seem great. 2 would be the best if the grain had kept going straight. If only. Otherwise I like 4 somewhat. There is much better out ther from an aesthetic view, but there may be nothing wrong with 1, 3, or 4.

Aren't you in Sydney right about now, Bruce? A lot closer to the source than most of us!

I am in Sydney! In fact, I have struck up an email correspondence with Tim mentioned a few posts back. I was thinking that would be Tim O'Day, but it's not. I am killing ten hours here in the airport. Oh joy. Actually, I am half way through it, and very glad to have this iPad to play with. I loaded some books and Angry Birds on it before I left. Mostly, however, I am corresponding.

I sincerly hope you find Tim Spittle the great bloke that he is. And I hope you come home with some great Australian woods to put to good use.

What ever you're up to, have a great time, Bruce.

Thanks guys...it is an reputable tonewood dealer overhere and they told me already that all the AAAA -stuff was gone - i had hoped for more flame.
The price for a set would be 160.- Euros. From an asthetic view my favourite would be 2....but i am also not so sure about the grain... no. 1 seems to have the tightest grain to me.

It may be interesting to check out availability and price at the source... disclaimer: I have no knowledge about quality of tone woods but know that Gilet makes lovely guitars. Shipping may be expensive though...
