I have always thought that Greenfield’s recordings in his studio of his various guitars are always simple but great sounding and seem to highlight the various different guitars - of course it helps he has people like Tony McManus to do them for him ;-)

Humm while it is true that one can manipulate/mix a recording to the point of having it not be an accurate representation of the guitar .
The other side of that coin, is that a recording (especially a close mic'ed ) as Rick noted, what the mic/s record, may in fact not be the same as the total overall sound of the guitar plus room resonance, that the human hears playing it in the room.
And thus often the RAW recording is also not an accurate representation of the sound of the guitar . SO trying to get back some of that resonance via things like a bit of reverb etc. is not necessarily being deceptive or "questionable" per se. IMO

One could say the "integrity" comes from the intention of the person doing the mixing, not the process

This is why, when I’m attempting to get as much realism as I can, I use omni mics and place the mics 20” or more back from the guitar.

I think, imho, that getting the best room possible is probably the first thing. I have terrible rooms to record in, no treatments, and most of my work in my daw is getting the recording to sound better in spite of the room.

Not qualified to comment here since I am such a Noob when it comes to recording but enjoying reading the discussion.

Mark, your website is spectacular and dangerous (it fires off the GAS internal hormones big time!).
