Christmas in June at the studio! Newish monitor speakers
If you've followed my blog-ish for a while you may remember that in March of 2009, at the request of my boss, I auditioned JBL's then-new LSR4328P networking monitor speakers. Once you get an array in place, you network them via USB and, using an included mic, they set themselves up and balance themselves. My boss and I were really impressed with these speakers, so we acquired 5.1 monitor arrays for two control rooms and stereo arrays for a couple more including the matching LSR4312SP subwoofer. I've mentioned that I "shop" my mixes around the complex to check them on various monitors - the JBLs are my first stop and the units I most trust for a secondary reference. Only, we never got around to getting a set for my room.
It's okay, I've got to admit that I live in the nicest control room with the best monitors in the complex. Nevertheless, with my music operations one of these monitor arrays would make my life considerably easier. Every year at budget time I would ask nicely for an array. Time moves on and JBL discontinued the product so this year when I made my pitch I had links to some eBay auctions. Without getting my hopes up, my boss smiled and said, "We'll see. You sure have waited long enough." That was a move up on the probability scale, and it happened a few weeks ago. This morning while I was mixing he walked in and nonchalantly said, "I've got your speakers." He'd found a near-mint set of the LSR4328P main speakers and grabbed them up. Glory and trumpets! We're still looking for a matching LSR4312SP subwoofer. Meanwhile I've got the mains connected up, a quick manual setup done, and tunes going in and I'm diggin' em. They've got a really nice, smooth response with a fairly present bottom end - probably too present. I can't wait to do a auto-setup. Bob

I tracked down a Cat.5 cable and our LSR4300 tuning kit and set-to today. The Cat.5 networks the speakers and the tuning kit has an instrumentation mic. Once you've got the speakers networked you set the mic in head location in the mix position and press a button. It gives you five seconds to back away and then feeds a set of sweep tones through the speakers that are picked up by the mic and fed back to the microprocessor in the speakers. They analyze the response nodes of the room and adjust to correct. The whole process takes about twenty seconds and, hey presto! you are ready to go. It takes all the round, woolly sound out of the array leaving just a nice, smooth response. There's also an EQ section that allows you to tailor the rig as well.
I can't wait for a sub to come available! Bob

I remember those from when they were first released. I also remember mixing on a set somewhere...I can't remember where though. Definitely a nice addition. Congratulations.
