The FabFilter stuff is also nice, the only one I've bought is the EQ, which also seems very useful. I use Dynamic EQ much more often than just straight EQ, and this seems to combine the ideas well. Still new to that one, too, tho.
Some of the new-ish tech makes me feel like an octogenarian trying to set the clock on his vhs player. I don't really think it's over my head, I just need to sit down and spend a few days with the FabFilter Pro-MB. My problem is there are too many distractions in my life. I have two ailing pups that require a lot of time and attention. I've also discovered recently that there are plugins for Photoshop so I've been educating myself on that topic.

But I'm seeing more and more mastering engineers using multi-band compression as a sound sculpting tool that delivers a result not entirely unlike what you'd get from an eq. It's intriguing.

Oh I know there are excellent classics style comps sans dedicated attack and release etc. , that just seem to "work". It just that now days I seldom use them. I guess I am just spoiled with my IGS 3U (vari-mu) that I use almost exclusively, that has them.

I'm of a mind that the fewer knobs I'm responsible for, the fewer mistakes I'll make.

- The Helios69 preamp/EQ is very nice for the Unison input channel.

- Pultech EQ is great without turning any knobs. Just instantiate it and you get an improvement. One of those secret sauce plugs.

- The Sonnox Inflator is great that secret sauce factor.

- I use the Ocean Ways studio to add some room into my spare bedroom wonderland of bad-room recordings.

-All of the reverbs that I have tried have been good, though adding the right amount of reverb has never been my strong suit.

-The classic compressors each do well. I think there's a collection or mini-bundle. I especially like the fairchild in small doses.

-The EP-34 tape echo is great for some electric guitar stuff.

For non-UAD, the Fab-Filter ProQ3 (EQ) is very well liked. The next generation of Soothe - Soothe 2 (?) - might be the only plug I've paid full price for. There was no way I was waiting for a sale after demo'ing it.

Well, you guys have completely overwhelmed me. Since I am a first time user, does anyone have any good "starter" videos for the UAD apollos? it seems YouTube has a ton but I dont know what is good.

What DAW are you using?

The interface, once set up and functioning, is not where you'll be doing the heavy lifting. It's all about becoming proficient with the daw you've decided upon, as well as proper mic use and technique. Accept that you'll be overwhelmed for a while. It's a lot to wrap your head around at first. Luckily for you, there are lots of resources for learning these days.

UAD has quite a few tutorials that should get you going. As far as plugins, just go slow, learn one at a time as you need something. You don't have to learn them all at once, or for that matter, you never need to learn them all, just what you need.

Are you answering the "which DAW (i.e recording and mixing software) are you using" question ? And you mean the Luna (recording system) which comes bundled with apollo ?

Be careful with Luna if that's what you decide to go with for your daw. All the plugins UA sells for it are proprietary so you'll never be able to use them in a different daw should you decide to go in another direction. And going in another direction is possible since Luna is going to lag behind the other daw options for quite a while since it's a brand new product.

The one advantage Luna has is that it eliminates the need to mess around with UA's Console program when using unison plugins. But so far as I can tell, that's really the only advantage at this stage. I really dislike the proprietary set-up. Every UA plugin I own can be used whether I'm using a UA interface or not. But as I said above, the Luna plugins are Luna-only. I really don't like that at all.

This site has some Logic Pro video series on it. Pro content, too.

https://www.groove3.com/

I think they're doing their yearly $99 all access sale. I know it's not free, but it's cheap, very good and professional. At least one series of UAD, too.

I ultimately left apollo twin as my interface but that was because I needed more I/O. I kept my apollo satellite because I really do like the plugins. I wasn’t using their Unison plugins.
