I was right across from their booth on Saturday at the Seattle Folklore Society/Songwriters in Seattle table. I saw one just like that (yours?) on display and kept wondering what it would be like to play.

That evening Chad Graves of the Hillbenders was playing a huge instrument that looked a LOT like these pictures.

Is it a lap steel? What's the sound like compared to a conventional scale length?

Lap steel. Tuned to Open A, Open D relationships(151351) down 2 1/2 steps. 30" scale.

Yeah, that one was mine. My friend Larry was over there on Thursday. Chad (and what an awesome player HE is) played it several times. Were you there on Saturday after we put the pickup into it, and Chad was running it through his pedalboard?

It is low and resonant. Big, lovely tone.

I was there in the afternoon until 8. I don't think I heard anything coming from there but I was talking with people a lot so I may have missed it.

Chad was playing something big through a pedalboard during the Hillbenders show in the Grand ballroom. It sure reminded me of your baritone lap steel in shape and size.

No, he had his Rayco resonator and an electric lap steel for the Hillbenders sets.

Naw, nobody talks much at Wintergrass...

Friday, Chad, Orville Johnson and the dobro player from fireside Collective (name escapes me) had a jam session at the booth. Talk about a lap steel masterclass...

As an aside, Smithers B.C. is a wonderful, relatively undiscovered gem, set amongst soaring mountains & glaciers, in a very fertile valley, some of the best powder skiing anywhere, populated by many artisans.
I’m sure your new instrument sings, Congrats !

Congratulations, it looks amazing!

I'm really interested to know what such an instrument sounds like. Any chance of a sound clip from yours, or a link to another one?

Col

Not mine (Obviously) but a well recorded clip.

And another one, 27" scale tuned down to Open B, while mine is 30" tuned to Open A.

Wow, nice clips. I could fall for that sound - more haunting than many resonator instruments.

Weissenborns in general have that haunting sound. I particularly love the Baritones. Indeed, they are very different from a Dobro reso. Dobros are meant to be ensemble instruments, with a sound that carries and cuts through. Weisseys not so much.

At some point, Friday I think, Dan Tyak was playing some blues and such and Orville Johnson sat down with his Dobo and was playing some lovely single line leads over the deep fingerpicked Weissy. Beautiful stuff.

It is is simply a result of chasing a sound that touches you.
