Love P90's Dru and had 'em on a white-cream old Les Paul Jr. BUT I was playin' in rock band and at loud volumes the noise was bad...so I personally routed out the pickup holes and installed a Duncan PAF in the front and a JB in the back plus I wired the JB for coil splitting and this guitar screamed as well as played like butta! ...BUT I still loved and missed those ZZ growling P90's.

I was wanting to dabble for a while... I picked up a 1940s Silverstone lap steel that had a P-13 pickup on it a while ago and really liked the sound and decided to start exploring that way. Got a mid-1950s Silvertone/Harmony archtop that also had a P-13 in it too. Then I decided that my most unused electric, a Korean made Epi 'Dot', had lain dormant for far too long. I bought a Seymour Duncan Phat Cat P-90 and had Paul Iverson install it in the neck position and set it up. For a four hundred buck guitar it plays and sounds ridiculously good.
Since then I've played with a Collings 290 and am now roaming the internet looking for more P-90 action.

I had P90s in the 330 I bought in circa 1969. I didn't know the difference between a 335 and a 330 back then. I discovered I liked humbuckers more. After 45 years I don't remember what the P90s sounded like. I just remember the hum. The 330, lacking the maple center block, would feed back like a chain saw when I kicked in my Fuzz Face.

Secondary my @$$, I've got the '11 goldtop version (the one with the PRS-style edge reveal that looks like 60-year-old smoke-stained binding) and it's become my primary guitar - yeah, they're that good...

It is an arched top. It's actually a maple cap on a mahogany body (just like a real LP). Since it has the wraparound tailpiece/bridge it's very resonant. The downside is you can only get the intonation perfect on two of the six strings. But most acoustic players aren't used to correct intonation anyway (did I just say that?).

Hamer Monaco III
These are great guitars - I love their vintage neck carve. Yes, that is a hand-carved spruce top. I found this minty one, and will be selling a red Monaco III w/ Lollars.

Has anyone tried one of these? I've always wanted a Melody Maker or LP Jr double cutaway but don't see getting one in my near or distant future.

I love the sound of P90s, though I don't currently have a P90-equipped guitar. I find my G&L is in the same sort of ballpark but still with the Tele-edge.
My favourite song featuring P90s is Another Brick In The Wall Part 2 by Pink Floyd - played on a gold top Les Paul direct to desk and then reamped later to get a sound Gilmour was happy with. Most people who don't know this assume it's a Strat...

They sound absolutely spectacular but in my experience they pick up so much noise that at idle they sound like a blender filled with broken glass whirring away. The noise-cancelling ones (p-100s) are terrible because they cancel exactly the stuff that makes the 90s so juicy!! I rarely use them because between crummy power and the rest of it, they are just too noisy. My second favorite pickups -- distant second, but a lot quiter -- are Gretsch Filtertrons, especially the repro versions sold by TV Jones. There are some similarities to the tone and they are way better than 100s.
