I’ve heard this prank ascribed to several different famous writers—I’ve also heard Oscar Wilde said that if you sent 5 such telegrams, 4 out of 5 receivers would vanish. I’m doubting that Doyle, my classmate Edgar, or Wilde ever pulled such a prank or made such a suggestion. But Dirk’s scammer is following in the tradition.
