Believe it or not, I sold a Martin D45 for my Guild D55 and couldn't be happier.

A good friend of mine died last year and left two guitars to his daughter. One was a 1980's Guild D-40, one of those overbuilt ones. I took it home and cleaned it up, restrung it and tuned it up. Then I told my wife to turn her back and played it then my Alvarez MD-60 and asked her which one sounded best. There was no contest. The Alvarez was head and shoulders above that old Guild. They did build they to last but the sustain is very short and the volume is not that great unless you play them very, very hard. I wouldn't recommend shaving the bracing on a guitar.......................except those overbuilt Guilds. It would be interesting to see how they performed after doing so.

Jumbo maple Guilds are wonderful instruments. Simply wonderful.
I would still have my F-50 if the neck had been just a little wider.

I don't have any Guilds, or even know what that model is- a maple jumbo, I'm guessing.
But I have a Gibson J-100 (not maple, bubinga) and I am very pleased with it. |
