Default How old are you in your minds eye?

I am 61 and today helped install 8 4x4 posts for a six foot wooden fence.
About killed me.
I still volunteer for stuff like this because for some reason I still think like I am in my 30’s.
I once read a study that the average human stops recognizing their age at around 32 years old.
We know that we are older. We know our birth date.
We have the aches and pains of older age.
But put us in a room with a group our own age and we will view the others as “old”.
It really has nothing to do with the fact that I have all of my hair and very little of it is gray. Even the wrinkles have been kind.
I am not sure who that guy is in my bathroom mirror. Some older dude?
I just feel like I must still be young. I must.
Except for the bad eyes and ears, the bad stomach and the lower back, and both knees, and those arthritic finger joints, and…

Fantastic post, made my wife laugh out loud.
I'm 62, she's 61 and we know exactly where you're coming from.

I'm in the same age neighborhood. My wife and I agree that we are 25 years old inside. When asked how our age makes us feel, we say we feel like we are 25 but more tired and sore.

I've been really fit all my adult life - the events of the last year and a half or so caring for my Dad and all that went with it have aged me some for sure. I can still do all the stuff I used to do when I was in my 20's, but there is typically longer rest periods before I do it again.

Several times this summer I'd go out and do a hard 40 miles on my bike, come back to the studio, get something to eat and go walk and carry 18 at the golf course. That's pretty good for 56 year old, but again, the next day the only exercise would be walking the course.

So, like Bob, I think I'm still 25 until the day after

This reminds me of a conversation I had with my aunt when she was in her mid 80s. She said "I know I'm getting old but I feel like a little girl inside".

Up until this year I’d say I felt a lot younger than my age.
This year has been a nightmare for me, and one outcome
has been I now feel my age.
No fun.

I read sometime ago that a persons minds eye has them 10 to 15 years younger than they actually are. I've been blessed with good health and people tell me I look younger then my age. Well I'm not. But I'll take what I can get.

I remember My Mum telling me that.
Now I'm 14 years older than my Mum, and four years younger than my Dad. Weird isn't it?

In 2006, whilst holidaying on a remote Greek island, my arteries started blocking up. I felt terrible but didn't realise how serious it was, but we got back to the UK alright, and I had three stents fitted.

I remember looking at a strange man in the mirror and thinking - he's dying.
With help from the NHS and particularly the British Heart Foundation, I started a fitness regime which lasted for ten years.

There are videos on YouTube of me singing and playing in 2016 looking ... OK. I reckon I've aged ten years in the last two, but, hey, I'm over 40 lbs lighter, and go to the gym three times a week, I don't drink any more (can't taste it), my blood pressure is lower than it's been in 20 years, and we did our first paid gig in two years on Monday, so ....

Interesting thread.

I'm just a little younger than the OP.

But, mentally I am solidly 20-25.

Physically I was at my best in my mid-late 40's (ran my best ever race etc.)

I'm still really active.

I'm shooting for triple digits...

Timely thread for me. I'm 63 and have similar thoughts and feelings.

I feel like someone is looking down saying "ok it's time for this guy to remove a body part" (next week I'm getting my gallbladder removed), "make his neck look more like a lizard", ok, and "while you're at it, give him more hair all over his body, especially coming out of his ears and nose".

My body and physical abilities were pretty stable until I was maybe 61 years old. I did a 17,000 mile solo RV trip around the country in 2016, I'm not sure if I'd be up to it today.

Our band members' ages range from 64 to 76...

Our grandmotherly-looking vocalist has the pipes of a twenty-something country-rock singer...

We're still cranking out many of those '60s pedal-to-the-metal wall-shakers we were playing half a century or more ago (albeit at somewhat reduced volume) and shocking the crap out of our peers - not to mention the Gen-X'ers and millennials who've seen us - doing it (hey, we were the ones who invented all that stuff... )

We've played at a couple of assisted-living/rehab facilities and senior centers, and the responses we received made it clear that there's a whole lot of young people in there shackled by the ravages of time and failing health - and we gave them the chance, if only for a little while, to get in touch with their inner youth...

We're not doing four-set nights like we did in our teens and twenties but the fact is we're still stepping out, we'll continue to do so as long as we're able, in so doing we've been an inspiration to many in our peer group who share our interests - there's a bunch of seniors from the community uke group where we met who've started hitting local song circles/open mics/jams - and, at this stage in our lives, we like to think of it as just one more way of both giving back and paying it forward...

Besides, if Mick and Keef can do it so can we - and we're arguably better-looking to boot...

I'll be sixty years old next October. My brother just celebrated his number sixty. We had a phone conversation not too long ago that went along the lines of..."how did this happen!' It seems like yesterday we were attending a Grateful Dead concert...well I won't get into the details. My goodness time does fly. My head still feels around 26. My body disagrees. I'm having to come to terms with that!

Timely topic for me. My mom turned 95 today! She still thinks she's 16. Rock on mom!
