Trying to keep even tension on the neck so as not to through a tuned string out of tune I start with the e, the E,B,A,G,D.

Low to high. Same with electrics. Yes, I go back and fine tune.

Oh, the habit may have been enforced by years of playing strats with floating bridges. Tension changed everything.

I tune from D out to the other strings. Then I recheck.

Simple physics. The larger the string. The greater the pull.

I tune from 6 to 1 and go through till stable.

The bigger the string that moves, the more the affect on the smaller strings.

As with nearly everything else in life, my wife (of 34 years) and I are exact opposites:

I ALWAYS tune e to E (1st string to 6th string).

She ALWAYS tunes E to e (6th string to 1st string)

Hey Phil, I start with the A string as well to use as a reference if I don't have a tuner.

With tuner, I start low E-A-D-G-B-E.

Just to confirm, the little 'e' means the high e string, "1" string, correct?

Don't think so. For example, the tension of the strings currently on one of my guitars range from 23.31 lbs for the second string to 28.73 for the fourth string. Or do you refer to something else?

Seems amazingly logical to me, so I'm sure someone will explain in great detail why I'm totally wrong. That's cool - I'm here to learn...

Then I’ll learn right alongside you, Ray, because I do the same thing you do for the same reasons.

Yep, he said it first.

I tune my high E string to pitch, and then tune the rest of the strings to it. Tuning this way prevents errors creeping in, as they can when tuning progressively.

I’ve never owned a guitar, electric or acoustic, that I could tune in any fashion that didn’t need fine tuning, or re-tuning.

I seem to read in this thread that there are those guitars out there, or at least claims made that there are.

If so, I’d advertise those for sale, and highlight that in the ad. Due to the extreme rarity of such an instrument, they could command a huge premium.
