Sound port - turn on, turn off, don't care?
I'm trying to decide whether to add a sound port to a new custom build. This would not be an experiment for the builder, as he's done a variety of sound ports many times before.
I'm not buying for resale, but you never know what the future brings. If you were buying a used known-luthier-built guitar, would you walk away from it because it had a sound port and you didn't want one, because it didn't have one and you prefer them, or would it not factor into the desirability of the guitar to you one way or the other? My gut says a sound port will limit your audience, and many people would walk away from a guitar with a sound port, but I don't have anything empirical to back that up. Given that much of what I've read is in the "no difference" to "sometimes makes a difference," and I haven't seen any, "OMG! a sound port is a massive improvement!" I'm leaning toward leaving it off. Thanks for your thoughts! |

+1 on Soundports!
I'll weigh in with the thumbs up for the soundport! I have a soundport in both of my Stehr guitars and feel that they greatly enhance the musical experience for the player. Friends have also told me that they feel the volume from a listener's point of view is greater as well--I realize that is probably a debatable issue. I just enjoy playing my guitars that have a soundport more due to my enjoyment and sound perception--I just feel more immersed in the tone and sound. I would definitely have it incorporated into any future build that I commission, and I consider it a plus on any used guitar that I may be considering. I'm sure you will get opinions running the total gauntlet here--just my 2 cents worth!

I've never had a customer return and ask me to plug a soundport. I've been adding soundports to our guitars since the mid 1990's and I could probably count the number of custom orders, on one hand, that do NOT have soundports in them. If designed properly soundports sell them selves, new or used.

I actually prefer a guitar with soundport.

I do not like them at all. I don't like a hole in the beautiful side wood of a guitar and I especially do not like finishing around them. I have a little saying that when I see pro guitar players putting holes in the sides of their pre-war Martin and Gibson guitars, I'll be a little more accepting of them. Now, with that said, I have sat a few feet in front of Grit Laskin while he played one of his guitars with a side sound port and I did hear a difference as he covered and uncovered the port.

Ports...
I will not buy another custom without a port and at least one bevel.
Everyone I play John Kinnaird's #99 for comments most favorably on the sound! But what the hey. Play a few and see, what your ears like! Cheers Paul

sound port
I'd be more likely to buy one with a sound port.

Soundports are a great benefit for me. The sound getting directed through the port allows me to hear the guitar similar to the sound out in front of the guitar. For me, what I hear is the reason I play; I'm not typically playing for others. It's also a huge benefit for players with high frequency hearing loss.

When Grit Laskin visited for one of my Legendary Luthiers events he did a simple demonstration. He strummed a chord and took his hand on and off the soundport, the difference was obvious to all.

More volume and richer tone.
