Recommend small, loud, “stereo” output power amp...
I’m putting together a diy stereo rig with a Boss AD-10 processor preamp
and a couple of small indoor/outdoor Insignia 120watt, 5” speakers that I picked up at a thift store for $5. I am currently using 2 Quilter toneblocks as power amps. One to each speaker. They sound good and have alot of power(vol) but I ultimately seek to run just one power amp with 2 outs(stereo). I just picked up a used ISP “Stealth” stereo power amp used from Guitar Center online, but unless its broken(it’s used), at 80watts each putput, it has very weak power(vol output). No where near the vol of the Quilters with both at equivalent vol setting. Getting to the point . . . Can anyone recommend a very small, powerful, power amp with stereo outs? I seek smaller than “rack” size. Similar to the size of the Quilter Toneblock models. I’ve looked around online, but no luck. Other than large rack units or two seperate micro size units such as the Seymour Duncan “PowerStage” units, or the many preamp pedal size units. Thanx for any help! |

It looks like the Crate Powerblock amps had stereo outs. Used prices are around $150 each. I remember when you could get one new for under $100.

Those speakers are probably very inefficient (they'd have to be to handle 120 watts and only 5" size), and may have a higher impedance (ohms), hence the lower volume from the amp you tried.

I know you don't like rack sized stereo power amps, but power amps need to dissipate heat and the larger enclosure helps that. But my thinking is, a stereo rack sized power amp is more compact and efficient for carrying, than two quilters, with power wires and in/out wires.

Car amps are cheap, small, powerful, and stereo. I've used them in several DIY projects like this.
