The braces that reach the linings in the lower boat are tapered to virtually nothing. (We do leave a very thin web of wood- so thin it's semi-transparent - that tucks under the linings for stress relief.) The reason these braces are tapered is to free up the movement of the lower bout. The built-in tension of the top is greater in the center where the braces are larger and taller. The thinning of the braces help the vibration of the top to be accentuated. Everyone's bracing pattern is their take on how to dictate the string tension into acceptable tone generation. Essentially we are stabilizing the upper bout and loosening the lower. There's more to it than that, but why spoil the romance?
Thanks, got it....Just make it perfect please

Headstock ears going on to strengthen the headstock and provide the proper width. It also gives a nice view of the neck lamination:

Here is a picture of the headstock veneer being glued on, this is from the same material from which the rosette was fashioned:

Wow! That headstock is going to be off the charts. And really tie in with the rosette. Excited for you Tom.

Thanks Dennis....under the clamps is an area of sapwood which I really like, but does keep the veneer from being perfectly symmetric which may not be everyone's cup of tea, but those who know me know that I like that natural look and beauty in the wood (live-edge headstock of my Hatcher for example). If we don't like it when we get a better look at it, we can always change it I guess...The grain pattern in this is very cool.

Here is a picture of Ryan scraping the sides of the guitar...

Next is a picture of the Celebes Ebony with purflings and bent to be used for bindings. What beautiful grain in that!!!

Finally is the Celebes Ebony material and purflings to be used for the wedge:

Sure is some gorgeous binding! I take it the criss-cross pencil in the scraping pic is so Ryan knows where he's been and going, right?

Looking forward to seeing the binding go onto that box.

Very purdy indeed!

Yessir. I need as much help as I can get. I was never good at drawing inside the lines, so I just scratch it over and scrape it off.

Thanks, it really is nice looking stuff. I wonder if the lines also tell him a little about the depth that he has taken?

ME TOO... Steve and I have been working on some other decisions to be made mostly dealing with the fretboard and inlays etc. These are the tough ones for me because they really can add a lot to the overall look, or fail and not turn out as one hoped....I am in good hands though for sure.

Default Some headstock work done today

The headstock veneer is from the same slab of redwood burl that the rosette was made from. The first picture is the sanded veneer with the ledge routed for purflings and bindings:

The next is the purflings installed and holes drilled for tuners:

Bending the ebony bindings for the tight curves of the headstock:

And the end product, bindings and purflings installed and headstock cleaned up:

OK--I see it too.

But I like the elfish creature at the top with its beard, oval mouth, dark round nose, and top knot!

Haha, got it, the top tuner peg holes for eyes...who needs wabi sabi when you are just plain weird????? I kind of had to talk Steve into this one, I was a little worried that I would not like it, but I do like it now that it is done. One of the questions was how the logo would fit into this, we will wait and see on that...

Yeah, when I first saw it without finish, I had my doubts. But it really came alive with the finish and all the contrasts--looks good!
