Repair Person for Early 50's Epiphone Archtops
Some pre-purchase due diligence ...
Can you recommend someone who does repairs and maintenance on early 1950's Epiphone archtop guitars with pickups? I promise to post pics when I find the right guitar. Thanks and have a nice weekend!

Hi Rob. You might have better luck getting recommendations if you mention where you're located.

This guy is the Grand Poobah of guitar techs - nothing (literally) that he can't fix, and well worth a day trip from your parts:

You might want to check on the wait list with Mark Erlewine. He may have “Trigger” in the shop!
If you’re thinking of making the trip up to Cap ‘o’ Texas, you might consider Pete Skermetta as an option. I’m waiting for an opening for a similar era Gibson, in fact. Good luck with it! |

Gracias Mark! Part of my concern is I'd like a repair person to perform an in-hand inspection before I close any deal. I may end up going to an archtop builder, such as Tad Brown, for help.

Yes, find the absolute right person for that job!
I’m looking for an inspection and possible refret of a ‘54 ES125, for reference. Best wishes! |

Hey Mark, speaking about Gibson guitars, I was reading that Pete Moreno (Moreno Guitar Clinic, Kalamazoo, MI, 269-372-1126) was a trusted archtop repair/maintenance/setup person).

Thanks for that Rob!
I’m going to give Pete first crack (bad metaphor!) since he’s in the ‘hood and has a stellar rep. He worked at Collings for quite a while before going off on his own career in lutherie and repair. Haven’t met him but we’ve spoken and I’m very optimistic. |

Mark , In Houston …..grab your guitar and take it to Neil Sargent . Neal is superb on all guitars . He did an old Epiphone Casino and A Fender Coronado for me. He does most of the local stars work . Check him on the Net , I don’t think he advertises but people write about him a lot.
