That’s why the iPad.
It shows one page at a time.
There is a Bluetooth page turner that is a foot pedal.
I still use a notebook.
But if I had a full size iPad and a page turner...
It would enhance the P&W process.
Though I’d use it with a black page and white writing so it would be less obvious.

I see tablets replacing sheet music in a variety of performing environments, at the same time making it more acceptable when it used to be considered lame, amateurish.

I get the "cocktail piano" type entertainer gig, if your goal is to be versatile and cover a lot of requests, etc. A friend of mine does that, I sat in with him recently and looked over his shoulder playing soft rock tunes I only knew from the radio. Easy, fun, and the audience likes it.
But if I showed up at the bluegrass - or worse, jazz jam, with a fake book, it would raise eyebrows or laughter. That's changing at jazz jams, though, if you're a keyboard player, etc, I've seen guys bring up changes on their phone. Better that than getting lost while somebody's soloing.
I play in a big band, it's all charts for a reason, we have parts to play, not just 3 chords and lyrics. But I have a singer-songwriter friend, she gigs solo a lot, but always uses sheet music, I think it's a security blanket.

Well i'm an older rounder . I still memorize
my stuff. But i use ipad on stage.
it holds my setlist and the words to all
the songs i do. I can store different length
setlists for 1-2-3 or 4 hour gigs. in the band
we use a touchmix mixer and the ipad has an app
to run the board. If i get a request for a song
i know. providing the place has usable Wi Fi ..i can
quickly go over to ultimate guitar tabs or whatever
and it will give me chords and lyrics .
I have made enough tips doing these type of request
to pay for the Ipad Some guy tipped me 20 to do
"love me tender" Easy enough song I just needed the words and chords ..
Onsong is a great app.
Best 20 bucks i've ever spent on music stuff.

Apparently, AGF shames people for not memorizing hundreds of songs now. Sheesh.

Amen - ditto!

Just pulled up my OnSong app and the current count is 878 songs on my ipad. I probably regularly play about 100 of those and for many of those, I don't need the ipad. But I had a couple of requests last weekend for songs I'd literally never played and pulled them off. The tippers loved it!!! And it's sometimes a fun challenge to pull something off live on the fly that you've never tried.

If I had a performance show in more of a concert setting where I was playing 15-20 songs I'd rehearse and memorize everything.

But for most of the gigs I play, it's like Mr. Goat Whiskey described!

I just Googled teleprompter on stage and came up with dozens of images of the likes of Elton John, John Mayer, and more, using a teleprompter on stage.

I just don't see what the big deal is using one.

Let me try to explain... Those people you mentioned are not really true pros. They are just sellouts showing up to make money.

A true pro always plays all of their memorized songs from the heart. That simply cannot be done when glancing at words on a device. A true pro is deeply emotionally engaged with their audience with constant eye contact. Of course this also means they NEVER look down at their instrument - to do so would be, um, very unprofessional. Because of the deep emotional aspect of connecting with the audience, tears are often involved and, of course, this would make it difficult to see a prompter clearly. A true pro also never uses a written set list. This would distract from the emotional freedom to play whatever comes to mind at the moment, even if the rest of the band has never heard the music. They, too, must be pros and flawlessly follow along as they also are all making constant eye contact with the audience.

I hope this helps.

The less time I spend looking at a screen while creating music, the better!

My sets are typically 45 minutes long, all originals. If I can't remember ten of my own songs well enough to play them without a lyric and chord sheet, I'm not worthy of a gig!

The Songbook app lets you set the time by beats per minute. Pressing the scroll indicator makes the words scroll at that speed.

I'm the opposite. I've sung my songs but have mixed version 3 with version 8. Plus, the covers I sing, I've heard a million times!

Where can I sign up for some of these 45 minute 10 song gigs??? Mine usually run 3 - 4 hours and I'll play 80 songs or more. Most of them are requests on the fly. I'm obviously not getting the right gigs.

Lucinda Williams has a music stand with her note book on it, last time I saw her in concert someone asked her about it, she said everyone does it, you just don't know it. She seemed to use it as a quick "review" before the song. I have no problem with it....

Well, I’m 70+ and new to playing and singing. Started learning a couple of years ago. When I saw an iPad with OnSong I knew it was for me. I could make the words as Big as I needed and have it scroll to how fast I play and sing! Wow!!

Like magic. When I play on stage I have it, when I play in jams I have it. I can play with others without music but I don’t know lots of the songs soooo I have just over 1000 songs that I can bring up and quickly transpose. I’m not that good but folks think I’m a genius. What’s not to like?
