Chromes
I’ve been playing D’Addario Chromes for quite awhile. They sound good to me amplified or un-plugged on my Triggs archtops.
Never tried Monel strings; how might they compare/contrast?

The easiest answer is to say they will be substantially louder, acoustically.

Thank you for contacting Martin Guitar. Our Retro Strings are designed for acoustic guitars, not electric or arch top instruments. The longer winding has been discussed by our String Team but has not been addressed as of yet." Are there other monel type strings out there that might be wound long enough? |

Curt Mangan sells monel strings, THart, in both round core and hex core, but I'm unsure of their length.

I played half-rounds both my Triggs guitars; liked the sound but were hard to tune due to getting stuck on the bridge. I didn’t care for applying graphite to remedy the situation. I play D’Addario Chromes the the Triggs now.
Just for fun I put the half-rounds on my Martin D-18. It’s a nice result although the guitar doesn’t sound like a D-18 “is supposed to”. Glen

Update from my previous post: I have a Loar 700, I had been using martin monels 0.012, which I though worked well. I wanted a bit of a change, put on some D'Addario flatwounds (0.012), really loving it. It really accentuates the difference from the rest of my guitar collection and suits what I like to play on it - jazz, gypsy, rootsy stuff. They'll be staying for some time.
I recently did a short video with my daughter for Play Music on the Porch Day. I just put a zoom H2N on the table in front of us, was surprised at how well the guitar and strings cut through.

I liked the Monels also on my 805 Eastman acoustic Archtop. The best strings I've had on it so far though my experience is limited. I've also put Monels on my dread acoustic and have been happy with that. Does it give it a bit different tone, so not sure I'd always use them but it's great for the variety.
