Do you tip your guitar teacher?
It looks like an extra fee or gift of similar value.

At Christmas I do. I appreciate him. He is nearly perfect for what I want in a teacher. And I undoubtedly make a lot more money than he does.

I teach private trumpet students and haven't gotten a tip yet.

I can agree with rwmct, to me that would be a special gift, rather than a tip.

I have been teaching for 20 years+. I do not at all, expect a tip from any student.
I have developed some close relationships with some students. On occasion, I have received a gift from a student or parents of a student. But I do not expect any gifts or tips. I try to keep my lesson fees fair and reasonable. They reflect the time I spend with a student. Not just the lesson time but also research, preparation and additional support when a student is ready to participate in an activity such as performing. Tip your wait staff, cabbies, bartender, etc, those that provide you with good service and who are otherwise underpaid. |

I would normally give service personnel, who provide a personalized service, a small tip at Christmas.
So, we tip the Farrier, the Violin Teacher, etc

I do not expect a tip at all. I will give my students a little something for Christmas and will usually receive something in return.

As a teacher of private music lessons I don't get tipped, though I often receive Christmas gifts and sometimes parting gifts. I am prepaid in September for the year (September to June), and am pretty reasonable at $800 per year, but my hourly rate is higher than most of my clientele's hourly rate so I certainly don't deserve a tip. When I feel I need a raise, I will raise my rate. Tipping would make me feel awkward. Once in a while someone will bring me a coffee or a snack.
One exception...Years ago I had a student who refused to come to my lesson studio and insisted that I go to his house. He always paid me double for my trouble (I forget what my rate was back then), always had snacks out, and usually insisted I accept a premium beer as well. He was a rather wealthy lawyer and I figured it doesn't hurt to have one of those in my network. When my kids were young I didn't tip their piano and voice teachers, though we always gave something at Christmas, and I referred a lot of business their way...what goes around comes around. |

No, absolutely not. If you get along great, come holiday season a nice bottle of wine or something along those lines might be OK.

I agree. None of my students, whether adults or kids, has ever tipped me, and I'm not sure how I would react if one of them tried. I suspect I'd just tell them that the cost of the lessons covers everything.
But some treat at Christmas time would be gratefully accepted, in the spirit of the season. But that's never been something I expect, which makes the occasional occurrence even nicer. whm |

I'm a Brit and the notion of "tipping" is so old fashioned to me - it would be a bit like implying that the person is beneath you socially.

My wife (piano teacher) and I have been giving private lessons for 45 years and I never received a tip. But we do get lots of gifts at Christmas and a few after the year end recital.
While I have not accepted new students for a couple of years now (except grandchildren), I only charge $50 an hour and always considered it the least profitable thing I did - a partially paid community service. I would not have accepted a tip gladly.

Yes, THIS! Plus the fact that, in 57 years of playing, the only 'guitar teacher' I've ever had is me!

Wow! I never thought of this before reading this post.
Now I feel like I should give my banjo teacher a gift. Any ideas for what that gift should be? |
