I just bought an HD28 and I love it. I really like the feel of the new neck. I recommend you try both the V and the regular version. You may find that you like the new neck better.

There is another option - you can also go Custom Shop. I have one Custom Shop Martin coming from MFG (MFG is dealer in the USA, very well respected in this forum and has a very strong following when it comes to Custom Shop Martin and fantastic prices in comparison to Australia). Back to my Custom Shop - I have a Custom Shop HD28 coming with Sitka VTS top and Adirondack forward shifted "Golden Era" braces (same braces used in the Marquis) for a little more than your budget including shipping and import/GST. The price killer in my custom was the VTS top.

If you do not need the VTS top, a Sitka with the same bracing as the HD28V and with the Mod V neck will set you back at your budget even after including shipping and import duties/GST and you can even ask for a 1 3/4 nut width Mod V which makes it identical to your current Martin. The HD28V has a nut width of 1 11/16 Mod V so it is not exactly like your Clapton.

I think either the Collings or the HD-28V , if you like the modified v neck -
typically the Martin is a bit less exspensive ( in the US )-its a nice sounding instrument .
You might check with Jon Garon ( my favorite guitars ) i believe he more than
likely has sent guitars to Australia -hes a big martin dealer , and he is a very honest person
( have meet him at a bluegrass festival a number of years ago )
might be the ticket and save you some bucks -ask around the forum about him , and ask alot of questions of him
- also tell him a bit about the sound you want and how you like it set up

The only Martin i own is my OM28v ( i love the v neck as well )
and i have played a few HD-28v and the HD-28 -both are exceptional guitars.

Interesting... How long was the wait?
Tbh I’m not fussed on VTS - it’s been a joy to enjoy my Clapton blossoming with age (mines from ‘95!)

As you can see, Tony Burns above also recommended MFG (My Favourite Guitars).

The wait is 6 months and requires 50% deposit. They can do 40% off retail which is something Australia can't do on Custom Shops.

Definitely something to keep in mind.

How would the Santa Cruz D model/PW stack up against the HD-28V/D-28 Marquis...?

You can't go wrong.

Have you considered a D 18? It would give you a different sound. Rosewood dreads are for me too much of a good thing. Now the Guild D 55 is more balanced, so it works, but that is getting away from the Martin sound. If you want more upscale you could try the Collings D1

So I've narrowed (or expanded) my list to include the following...

Martin D28 Marquis
Martin D18 Golden Era
Bourgeois Vintage D
Bourgeois Counrty Boy
Bourgeois Ray Lamontagne Signature

I'd consider a Santa Crua D/PW as well but I have to draw a line in the sand somewhere...

The two martins you have narrowed it down to are STELLAR. They are pretty much the same guitar except for the rosewood and mahogany difference. The necks are the same. Since you already have a rosewood guitar, I would lean towards the D-18GE. It is absolutely awesome.

Yeah I’m starting to lean more that way... the D18GE or the country boy are the front runners atm!
